"Hey."

Varian flinched, nearly dropping his book in surprise. He gathered his wits, turning around and locking eyes with the other teen. "Oh, hey Hugo." Varian greeted, turning his attention back onto the pages. He heard Hugo approach him, the crunching of leaves getting louder until they stopped right behind him. "I can hear you thinking all the way over from my tent." Hugo said casually, plopping himself down on the grass beside him. Varian rolled his eyes, moving to flip a page of his book. "You okay?" "I'm fine." "You always say that."

Varian glanced at the blonde, brushing his long bangs out of his way. "Why do you care? Shouldn't you be busy antagonizing Nuru or whatever you do?" He questioned. Hugo gasped in mock offense, leaning to wrap an arm around the more petite boy. "What, am I not allowed to check up on my favorite person?" he replied. Varian chuckled, pushing Hugo away from him.

Hugo placed his hands back on the grass, looking up at the sky. "Are you upset about the trial?" He asked. Varian turned to look at him, furrowing his brow. "What do you mean?"

Hugo only shrugged, still not looking at the other. "You seemed pretty upset back there." he clarified. Varian was silent for a long time. "I...I just hate feeling useless." Varian admitted, closing his book and placing it beside him. He ignored the beautiful landscape in front of him, looking down at his legs. Hugo raised an eyebrow. "Who said you were useless back there?" He prompted, leaning backward to lay on his back. "You almost died." "And you made sure I didn't."

Hugo smiled softly once Varian's eyes locked with his. "You made sure all of us didn't die. I don't think that's being useless, Var." he assured. Varian blushed at the expression. He wasn't used to seeing this side of Hugo.

Nuru and Yong would be so surprised to actually see them get along. They didn't fight all the time. When they were working on an experiment or project, the two operated like clockwork together. They complimented each other's strengths and balanced out their weaknesses. But at the same time, they conflicted with each other.

Breaking the silence, Varian laid down beside him spoke, "Hey, Hugo?". Hugo hummed in question. Varian hesitated for a moment, refusing to look at the other alchemist. "I...I'm glad I met you, y'know?" He confessed. Hugo blinked, a look of surprised confusion on his face. Before he could speak, Varian beat him to it, "I mean it! I like actually having a work buddy, I like having someone to childishly bicker with, and I just like having you around.". Hugo blushed, a smile forming on his face.

"Yeah...I'm glad I met you, too."
