Chapter Five: Good Companions

We sat in silence until my breathing finally slowed. I was still curious as to who it was that was basically hugging me from behind. How could I let a male get so close to me?

Something brushed my cheek and I noticed a long dreadlock. A slight smile crept onto my face.

“You better?” He asked. I felt his lips brush my ear.

“Yeah,” I sighed, “I don’t know what came over me. I just couldn’t control what I was doing.”

“I know. Let’s get you cleaned up okay?”

I nodded and he helped me up. He pushed aside the glass on the floor with his shoe so there was a safe place to stand.

Quietly, he ran the water and took paper towel and tweezers from under the sink. He ran the tweezers under the water and wiped them off.

“I’m sorry if this hurts,” he said gently taking my wrists and turning over my hand to expose the bloody side. I gritted my teeth and turned away.

One by one the glass was plucked from my left hand, then my right. After that he gently grabbed me by the waist and sat me on the counter so he could get the glass from my knees and shins.

Finally all the glass was out and he gently cleaned the new wounds.

“Okay you’re basically go to go,” Winter said and he turned his back to me. “Hop on.”

“What?” I half laughed.

He turned his head to look at me, “Your legs are going to be tender and sore, just wanted to make things easier.”

He stared at me until I sighed and wrapped my arms around my neck and my legs around his waist. Where his hands held under my legs was getting warm in a good way. I rested my head on his shoulder as he carried me back to my room.

After laying me on my bed he sat down on it too and looked nervous. He fidgeted with his fingers.

“Winter?”

He looked up when I said his name.

“What’s up?”

After pausing for a moment he said, “I-I have a dog, a-and I want to leave him with you f-for a little. You know, for like company I guess.” He looked down.

“Of course,” I smiled, I loved dogs, but my mom would never let me get one, she said she had a traumatizing experience and I never pushed her.

Winter grinned back a white smile, “I’ll send him up. He’s very smart.”

“Okay.” We sat there smiling at each other like we were taking joy in each other’s happiness. After a bit I started to giggle out of the awkwardness. Winter looked shocked.

“What?” I asked through my giggles.

He shook his head and smiled again, “I love that sound.” He stood up only bending over for a moment to quickly kiss my forehead and before I could protest, he was out the door.

My forehead felt warm and little tingles were left behind, not intense ones, but very pleasant ones that made my stomach flip.

It was only a handful of minutes later when I heard a slight scratching at the door. When it crept open, what walked out from behind it was enough to send me into a panic.
