Stories in the genre are premised on societies wherein humans are divided into a dominance hierarchy of dominant alphas, neutral betas, and submissive omegas. These terms are derived from those used in ethology to describe social hierarchies in animals

An omega can only get marked once. An omega starts to go through heat at 13 - 16 and start to taking the pills then. Heat lasts 5 - 7 days but if an omega has sex then the heat goes away for the time being

There are three main ranks in a wolf pack there's the Alpha which is the leader of the pack. The Beta which is the second in command to the Alpha and the Omega which is the peace keeper in the pack. Omega's however are seen as weak and are often treated horribly
