He stretched out his hand in concern and gently touched my ear. He carefully tucked my fine red hair behind it. His fingertips touched something ruff, something that I hadn't felt before. He pushed my hair out of the way so he could see for himself.
I watched his face change, from curiosity to confusion, to horror. By this point, I hadn't realised how close he really was. Close enough to touch, to kiss. But at the same time I felt terrified of him. I was all alone with this boy attached to my ear. The more I look at him, the more I feel safe. Or maybe that's just because he was gorgeous... I don't know.
"What is it?" I tried to sound casual, but there is nothing casual about someone investigating your ear.
"Hang on a minute," he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Carefully still lifting my hair out of the way, he took a photo. "What did you say your name was again?"
He shifted his weight so he was sitting right beside me and held out his phone. On the screen appeared to be what my ear looked like form behind. Man, I have weird ears!
And then I saw it. I can't believe I hadn't noticed it before. A row of dimly lit numbers and letters were engraved into my skin, vertically behind my ear.
"I didn't."
