"We understand death only after it has placed it's hands on someone we love."
After placing the frame which had that quote next to my family photo, I took out rest of my things to place them neatly at my home sweet home, unlike my life, which is bitter.
Living in Manhattan is not an easy thing. Crowded streets, diverse people and what not?
A lot of unemployment too. With great difficulty, last year, when I was 22, I managed to get a job at Collins Company as an software developer. The job sounds easy but working as it is the challenge. But still I stick onto it. Why? Because I'd become a derelict then.
I lost my mom and dad at the age of 20. That might not sound not-so long ago but it feels likes ages. All I had to do was study my engineering along with a part time job at the Cafe. Basically, I was and I am the breadwinner for my family. Ahh no! I don't have a family, so I'm the breadwinner for myself.
But now, after an year of my job, I got myself a new flat at Park Plaza, Canal Street. That was all I could afford. So now, the 23 year old me is happy.
I think.
No boyfriends. No siblings. Few friends. Work.
That's my life.
Anyways, coming to the flat. It's a three story building. My flat is on the second floor. A simple yet classy flat. Light blue walls, wooden doors, a bedroom, a bathroom, a balcony and a kitchen.
I chose to take rest from arranging my flat and trudged to the balcony.
I was enjoying the beauty of the busy city from my balcony when a sudden hand crept on my shoulder.
I shrieked so loudly that probably I myself would have become deaf. I turned back to see a cute little face of my bestie giggling.
"Seriously, Liz? You had to do that. Didn't you?!" I scolded her.
Once she completed her silly cackle, she spoke, "Chill, my dear Olives -"
"Do.Not.Call.Me.That" I interrupted her.
"-I thought I would help you unpacking. So, yeah. Just popped in....." She said ignoring my agitation.
Pet names are the most annoying things a human being could do. Isn't it? I mean, like why do they do that????? OLIVIA. 6 letters . OLIVES. 6 letters. Come on, what's the point in a so called Pet name?
And Liz knew that!
"Okay then. Let's start unpacking." Was everything I managed to say.
I had planned everything from weeks before, so I was so precise what I wanted. And I took a week leave for that.
"You know what? I'm so happy for you." Liz exclaimed as I walked to the bedroom, "Without your parents you pulled of so many things. You are just settled Olive. All you need is a perfect boyfriend a.k.a husband and then you are done. Oh then, I would be your bridesmaid. How cool is that? I just can't wait for the moment....Isn't it, Olive?....Olive? Olivia?" Liz blabbered until she recognised I wasn't scolding her for calling me Olive.
She came running to the bedroom from the hall to find me staring at a book. Precisely, a diary.
"Huhhh! You are safe." Liz sighed.
"What do you mean?" I asked amused.
"Well I've been speaking shit non-stop for the last 2 minutes and you weren't responding. I thought there's a ghost or something that killed you right away 'coz you entered it's home sweet home . Just like a typical Hollywood horror film." Liz blurted before taking notice of the book in my hand, "By the way, what's this book ????"
Well yeah, Liz is unstoppable speaker. She got that trait from her mother, Lilly. But I don't find it annoying because she speaks atleast 10 topics within the span of 2 minutes. So, I'll never get bored. That's a bonus of having a chatterbox best friend.
It's like I'm still with the Liz I met 10 years ago, accidentally during middle school. She is like my sister, even though I don't have one. My parents passed away in an accident, when I was in my engineering and her parents wanted to adopt me. But I said a no!
I refused because they are also from a middle class family bearing 3 children, including
Liz. She has a 26 year old elder sister, Stephanie, who got married 4 months ago and settled off in Paris. Also a 21 year old brother, Danny, who is doing his architecture course. And for Liz, she is 23 years old who works at the Cafe where I worked previously. Besides all this, her mother is a homemaker and her father is private carpenter. So after this long description you get it, why I refused to get adopted by them. I didn't want to become a burden to them.
"I don't know. I saw this yesterday but I didn't bother much. But look, it's a diary!" I said.
"Whose could that be? Previous tenants'?" Liz asked.
"I don't know. We can read the book to get to know about them but.....don't need. It'll be bad if that person gets to know." I shrugged throwing it inside my bag.
"It'll not be a problen. It might be an abandoned diary. We could read it. You know, the person would not get to know." Liz said playing with her fingers mischievously.
"No, Liz. They could've just forgotten it. I'll return it." I said as I arranged my clothes into the cupboard.
"Ahhaaa!! Then why did you keep it in your bag?" She questioned giving a detective look.
"I'll give it to the owner. Of course!" I sighed, "Now enough, let's get arranging."
