It took an hour for the omega to waken.

In that time, Miguel tried in vain to get the newborn to stop crying, but she hadn't so much as paused to take a breath. "I know, honey. I'm scared too, but your mommy's going to be ok."

It wasn't until the omega in question woke up they discovered the infant was just hungry.

Miguel reached down and pushed a lock of hair away from the boy's sweaty forehead. Robby should have been relieved to have gotten the baby out safely, to have survived the birth, but he just looked tired.

It wasn't even a physical tiredness one would expect after fourteen-hour-long labor but rather deep-seated exhaustion. The kind of fatigue that took hold of someone who felt like they had nothing left to live for despite holding the new life he'd just brought into this world in his arms.

The captain squeezed his childhood friend's hand even tighter — like he could will him through sheer stubbornness to remain here with him at his side and not go somewhere he couldn't follow.

Perhaps, it was selfish of him, but Miguel couldn't bear the thought of losing him or raising the beautiful little girl on his own. He would, of course, if it came down to it, but it would break him.

"What do you want to name this little sweetheart?" Miguel asked curiously as he took in the sight of the infant breastfeeding.

"Gemma," Robby said easily, cradling her in his arms.

Miguel felt his heart swell.

"My precious little gemstone," the love in his voice was unmistakable.

'The perfect name for a daughter of a pirate,' the captain mused with a love-struck smile.

Miguel sat back against the headboard and watched the scene beside him with a heavy heart. He knew without a shadow of a doubt he could spend the rest of his life right here.

"Robby?" he whispered softly as he reached out and cupped the side of the boy's face.

"Hmnn..." the omega looked up from the infant he was feeding.

"I wanted to let you know that according to my estimation, we'll be home early tomorrow morning."

Robby's face grew pale.

"I know you're afraid, but I will protect you and our baby at any cost. That bastard will never lay a hand on you again! I'll go to the war room as soon as I've made sure you're safe, and I'll have that creep imprisoned until his hanging."

The omega just tightened his grip on the baby he'd nearly died to bring into this world.

The pirate ship docked the following morning shortly after the sun rose.

Miguel helped the omega off the ship, his arm around his waist holding him up and guided him in the direction of the estate. His first priority was getting him to the infirmary since his body needed to recuperate.

Chris walked beside them, carrying the newborn in his arms and bouncing her a little to keep her from crying. She'd likely settle down once she didn't feel the constant rocking of the boat.

Under normal circumstances, the task would have fallen on the quartermaster, but the captain had been livid when he learned the man struck their leader's son and demoted him to powder monkey for the foreseeable future.

Robby paused suddenly, startling his "helper," and gazed up at the home he'd run away to escape. It looked exactly the same — like nothing had changed, and yet, everything had changed for him.

He could feel his apprehension grow as one of the crew ran ahead to notify his father of their return.

"Your dad's going to be happy to see you, I promise," Miguel assured him.

Robby prayed he was right.

Once they were in the sickbay, the captain laid him down on one of the beds and pressed a kiss to his forehead gingerly after making sure he was comfortable as possible.

Chris politely interrupted them to inform the captain he would go to find a wet nurse to feed the infant. He received approval in the form of a nod and headed out to find a nursing mother.

Robby was clearly tired and struggling to remain awake. The last thing he needed in his condition was a newborn suckling at his breast.

"I could have fed her," Robby insisted stubbornly.

"You're half asleep and can barely keep your eyes open — let one of the villagers feed her for now."

"It's my duty to feed my bab---"

"Your duty is to get better," Miguel insisted, nipping that attitude in the bud.

The omega fell quiet.

Miguel placed his hand on the omegas arm and lovingly ran his thumb over the inside of his wrist. "I don't want to leave you, sweetheart, but I have to go find security. They have to be notified Kreese should be arrested on sight."

"Thank you, Miggy," Robby's voice was already growing faint as he began to drift a little in the space between wakefulness and sleep. He was understandably exhausted from giving birth. "For everything."

The captain pressed a kiss to his collarbone — a few scant inches from where he planned to place his claiming mark eventually, and it only strengthened his resolve to make things right.

He just needed his soulmate to recover first.
