Episode 9: The Jurassic Group
It was just over a two hour drive to the Jurassic World base, but it felt like it was much longer. We were all tired and everyone except Ty and I eventually drifted off to sleep. I was fighting the drowsiness of my eyes the best I could. It was too dark to see anything other than the narrow trail we followed, which made it extra boring. I was glad that Ty never wanted to let me drive; I was much too tired to even think about it.
There were lots of trees and when we passed a clearing I could smell the fresh water springs in the area. None of the herbivores that lived there were out and about. I had seen some only a few times and it was always exhilarating to watch the huge creatures from a distance. But I dreaded the day that I would spot a carnivore.
I tried making conversation with Ty thinking that it would help both our drowsiness, but anything I said sounded like I needed sleep...which I did. The only thing that really made any sense was when I asked him who he had left in charge of Safe Haven while he was away.
"Aine," he replied.
"Oh," I said. It was the only thing I could manage honestly. Aine was the best choice to leave in charge though, she was smart and a quick thinker. Not to mention no one would die on her watch; her being a medic and all. I wondered how long he had known about our plan to leave quietly in the night. I thought I had done a pretty good job of keeping it secret, but obviously not.
Our long drive finally came to a close. The base came into sight, it was a bunker style base with a small treehouse lookout similar to Safe Haven's outposts. It was underground because we didn't want to attract any unwanted guests. I nudged Astro awake then woke the others. We all grabbed our things and got out of the jeep. Ty covered the vehicle with a thin camouflage net so it was hidden then we went into the underground base.
We opened the bunker door and climbed down a short ladder. Below was a good sized room with a small fridge, counter space, a couple chairs and a closet in one corner. In the closet we found the cots, blankets, and pillows, we each took one and set them up.
I curled up on my cot, wrapping myself in a blanket. My eyes were so heavy I could have fallen asleep then and there, but Astro thought otherwise. Her cot was set up next to mine and she got extra chatty before falling back to sleep.
"I'm glad Ty came with us," She whispered with a yawn.
"Uh huh," I mumbled.
"Do you think we'll get to kick some Spammers tomorrow? I'm ready for some action."
"Uh huh," I said again, too tired to say anything else.
"I haven't seen an Arsenal in a while, do you think we can take them all?" She asked.
"Uh huh." By now my eyes were fully closed and I was drifting off. Had she said something about Arsenals?
"I wish Deke had come with us."
"Astro, please go to sleep," Ty groaned quietly.
"Sorry, Ty. Good night, Sharky. Good night, Skylor. Good night, Robbie," she yawned. "Night, Cloudy. Night, Ty." She yawned again then finally fell quiet. We all went to sleep, anxiously awaiting what tomorrow would bring.
