Episode 2: The Escape

The lights flickered off and the echoing sounds of all the cells locking filled the air. I waited.

    Ten minutes turned to twenty.

I quietly got off my cot and pressed against the barred door, listening.

Everything was quiet, no one stirred. I leaned over and pulled the lock pick out of my sock, then fumbled with it at the lock. After a moment the lock clicked and I pushed the door open. Keeping to the shadows, I made for the main gate that led out of the prison cell area. I picked the lock. This was it, once I opened this gate the alarms would go off, I'd have just enough time to get my gear from the locked room and get out by way of the underground channels.

I shoved the gate open and made a beeline for the room that held my gear as the alarms came alive. I got into the room and found the locker with my number on it. I opened it up and grabbed everything inside. I first put on my belt so I could sheath my dagger and katana, then clasped my holoprojector on my wrist and pulled on my boots as I wondered what to do with everything else, there was no time to put everything on. A backpack in the corner of the room caught my attention. I stuffed everything else inside and slipped it on.

I ran out of the room and down the hall, all the while hearing the Spammers heavy footsteps close in. I had to find the metal grating to enter the channels. I ran through hall after hall, straining my eyes in dark. Finally I spotted it. The metal grating that leads underground. I lifted the heavy frame and slipped down, closing it back before I left. I continued through the cement tunnels until I thought I had put enough distance between me and the Spammers, then I stopped to catch my breath.

The holoproj on my wrist told me I was in the opposite group from Safe Haven. Fastest way there was through the LL group. That group was avoided as much as possible by everyone, the Spammers didn't even bother posting as many guards at the entrances. It was a graveyard of destroyed buildings, where mutant creatures lived and bands of outlaws roamed.

It was my only option. Without my powers it would take days to close the half circle between here and Safe Haven.

    Let me explain.

LL is made up of groups; all the groups are set up in a circle around a main group, the LL group. The groups are separated by huge walls, and each group is different. For example the Ninjago group is the island of Ninjago, water being the second barrier beyond the walls. The Marvel group has different cities and towns, making up different key locations; New York, Wakanda, (etc.). The Marvel group is where superhumans come from, like inhumans and super soldiers, while in Ninjago you have the elementals.

Each group has three checkpoints, one from the LL group and two on either side connecting to the surrounding groups. There are thirteen groups in total, including the LL group. I would have to go through five groups, which means I would have to go through ten checkpoints. There was no guarantee I would make it past all the checkpoints. Going through the LL group, I would only have to go through one checkpoint, and it wasn't guarded as much as the others. But it was risky all the same.

I followed the map in my holoproj through the channels until I found the exit. I stuck my head out, making sure no one was around then jumped out. I was in the City group, which means lots of buildings and places to stay low. I stuck to the shadows and made it to the outskirts of the city, near the checkpoint.

There were four Spammer Basics guarding the entrance, an opening cut into the thick wall. There was no way around them. Above the entrance and to the sides was the stone wall, stretching for miles, hidden in the clouds was the very top. No one dared to even try climbing the walls, there were cameras everywhere. You wouldn't make it far before you were swarmed with Spammers.

I was pretty sure I could take them all out, no problem. I charged out of hiding, unsheathing my katana, and met one of the huge robots head on. It wasn't expecting me and I slashed it in half easily.

"Eat that, ya bucket of bolts," I said as it collapsed to the ground in pieces, it's purple glow vanishing.

The other three were more difficult, but their fates were soon the same as the first. I sheathed my katana, running for the entrance. I ducked under the metal X that was an automated gate, and stepped into the gloomy LL group.
