Year 850
Kait's P.O.V
So is this how it ends, huh? I get to watch some people who seemed like great soldiers get eaten and now I get to die as well. Nice.
I can see all of the soldiers whizzing around the city, but it seems as if they'll probably be out of gas soon too. H.Q. I know has been overrun by titans, I can see it from here, the inner parts of the building probably full of the three to five metre class, but they're dangerous all the same, they still eat you.
My butt hurts from sitting on this roof for so long and I'm completely dehydrated. I noticed the bottles up here when I arrived on this house a few hours ago; now it's pretty tempting to check them out. I guess some guys must have climbed up here to drink but never cleaned up after themselves. I grab a bottle, hold it to my lips and see if anything comes out.
Nothing.
The air feels heavy and smells damp, there's obviously a storm coming. I can probably hold out until then, it's either that or wait until someone comes to rescue me, and I don't know how long the second option will take.
The rain came fairly quickly after I felt the air. I held out one of the bottles and it slowly filled with rain water. As soon as it was close to full I drank every last drop in there, letting out a sigh of relief as I finished. I then leaned against the chimney to the house and closed my eyes, rain still stinging my face with each drop.
It seemed as if the sky was crying over the loss of many good people today.***
I opened my eyes to the sound of giant footsteps approaching. The rain had stopped and I looked around in confusion, no one flies around the district anymore, everyone must have evacuated hours ago, leaving me behind. Did I fall asleep?
My eyes land on a titan as it takes slow steps towards me. I reach for my blades only to find none, all of them gone due to being dull. "Please go away..." I whisper, my voice shaking and lip quivering.
The titan just keeps hobbling towards me. It might've just been my imagination, but it's horrifying, blood-stained grin seemed to grow slightly wider. I know this is probably it for me, so I drop to my knees and lower my head. It's alright, I'm ready for death.
The creature's massive breaths ruffle my long ponytail. I hear the rush of wind from it raising its hand, there's more noise as the giant hand reaches back down to smack me.
I open my eyes once the hand is mere inches from my face. I jump back, doing a small flip on the way and landing on my feet. I slowly crouch down and grab a bottle. Now it's my turn to raise my arm, I let it fall back down with all my might, smashing the bottle in half, leaving the half in my hand jagged and sharp.
I glare upwards at the titan in hatred. "You have taken everything I've ever cared about away from me. My life as I knew it, gone. Now I know I can never get it all back, but there are little things I can do. So I hope this hurts..."
I take a deep breath and screech in rage as I jump and latch a cord into the titan's forehead. I jab the bottle into its eye and it cries out in pain and anger. This may use the last of the gas in my tanks to keep latched on but at this point what have I got to lose?
I stab the creature's eye over and over, it's blood splattering all over me, though it quickly comes off my face from evaporation and my angry tears.
I hear flares going off in the distance but try not to get distracted by other noises around me. I pay more attention now to the way my gear sputters due to lack of gas, so I decide to jump back down to the roof. I watch as the titan holds its eyes and screams.
I look around the city and see soldiers hanging from the far edges of the walls, drawing titans towards them. All except for this one of course.
It starts to slowly regain its composure and is now reaching for me. I quickly jab the giant hand with the bottle, spraying some more blood. The creature waves its hand, now in a massive fist, down above my head. I was able to jump out of the hand's path of destruction before it came down. Shingles from the roof were sprayed everywhere, some hitting me in the face, but I'll just be a little bruised and bloodied tomorrow, not really a big deal at the moment.
As the titan started to come closer I sliced its hand with the bottle again and again. Only then with a large splatter of blood and the sound of ripping flesh, did the monster fall to the ground. Steam filled the area, I tried to look through it as it started to clear, and found that I was not alone.
The first thing I noticed was his face, a solid jaw with light stubble lining it, blue eyes, and blonde hair that's about the same length as Cally's actually. Then I notice the emblem on his green cloak: blue and white wings. The Wings of Freedom. The Survey Corps symbol. He's a Scout, there's no doubt about it now.
I place my hands on my knees, the bottle still in hand. It takes a few moments for me to breathe normally again, I didn't even notice my breaths were so rapid.
I look up at the man again, his eyes narrowed at me. "Is that a bottle?" he asks, his deep voice full of surprise.
I hold the bottle out like the smart-ass I am in stressful situations. "I would believe it is," I answer.
"You're out of blades. Any gas left either?" his eyes un-narrow and fill with concern.
"If any, only a tad amount of fumes," I knock on a tank with my knuckles.
"Okay, c'mere..."
I give him a questioning look as he walks over to me, puts his arm around my stomach and lifts me up under his armpit. "What the hell are you doing?" I scream.
"I'm getting you out of here." he answers plainly like he's picked up hundreds of sixteen-year-old girls as if they're a sack of apples.
We quickly flew over the wall and landed right on the other side. It was strange to find the houses and streets on this side of the wall almost completely abandoned. Civilians must have gone even deeper inside the wall to escape the titan and human battle.
The soldier gingerly puts me back on my feet, "thank you," I say quietly.
"It was my duty, don't thank me for it."
He wordlessly studies my face for a while, "yeah, I know it's bruised. I got whacked with pieces of a house," I glare at him, crossing my arms.
"No it's not that. You just remind me of someone, that's all," he says.
"Oh, who?"
"A girl I trained with. She's a squad leader now. I think she might've trained your Training Corps last year." he pauses, "Adelae Hunt?"
"Yes, her. She's- well this is gonna sound weird, but she's my cousin," I say. "I'm Kait, by the way,"
"And I'm Rob Mason,"
"Well, thank you so much for getting me out of there, Rob. I would be dead if not for you," I sigh in relief.
"Don't mention it. You're choosing your branch in a couple days, what are you planning on?" he asks.
"Survey Corps." I tell him, my answer almost too fast.
"Just remember it's not very safe being a Scout,"
"I know, there's just stuff I need to figure out," I say.
An awkward silence passes through us for a while until Rob speaks again, "I should probably get back to aiding in the clearing Trost. Will you be okay?"
"I'll be fine," I say, nodding.
"I wish you luck with everything that is coming up in your future then."
"To you as well." I reply.
With that, he flew back over the wall. I really hope he'll be alright, but I shouldn't worry about him. So I walk over to a crate and sit on it to think for a while.
I was fending off a titan with a bottle... A bottle? But how?
I now understand that this world is really every man for himself, no matter how much we try to work together. People care about each other, but when it was either someone or their fellow human, they would try their hardest to keep themselves alive. And I want to survive in this hell of a world.
