Year 849

Kait's P.O.V

Today's the one day a week we have off of training. Cally said she would spend it hanging out with me and our friend Rachel Svensson, but I have not been able to find her anywhere. It's not like her to just up and disappear so I have no idea where she's run off to.
I scratch my head as I try to think on where she could be. "Did you find her?" I hear Rachel ask as she comes up behind me.
"No. I guess all we have left to check is the female dorms considering we aren't allowed in the male one," I say, my voice full of thought.
We walk quickly over to the large wooden building we've slept in for two years now. I open the door and start looking all over, from top to bottom. When we reach the back of the building, I notice a girl with black hair standing in the corner, her back to us, and hands up to her face. She hears me walking towards her and turns around quickly; it's Cally.
But she's completely different. She's chopped off pretty much most of her hair so it looks like a shaggy male haircut, which isn't too bad. But the worst and most disturbing part is that she has a needle stuck right through her fucking lip!
I listen as Rachel gags and her vomit splatters all over the wooden floor. I give a frowning face of shocked disgust, "what the hell did you do?!"
"Grab one of my earrings!" Cally screams, trying not to stab herself any more with the stupid needle.
I run to her bunk and look in her small, brown backpack. I reach into the front pocket, grab a tiny metal hoop, and run back to her.
"Take that fucking needle out!" I scream at her.
She rips it back out of her lip and I try not to throw up as well as I watch the skin shift and bleed. "Okay... gimme your face..." I sigh.
I take her face and pull her bottom lip farther from it. "Why do I put up with this shit..?" I grumble, fumbling with the stupid ring trying to get it into the hole in her lip.
Once it's finally in, I stare at Cally.
"What?" she asks.
"How about you tell me what all... this is?" I wave my hand around her facial area.
"Does it matter that I just did something I felt like doing?"
"No. But please, tell me that you at least got a clean, un-used needle," I say.
"Oh, yeah, of course I did,"
I look over to Rachel, who's sitting on a bed, staring at the wall with an utterly disgusted face. I look back to Cally, her hair is all at uneven lengths and sticking out everywhere. "Can I fix your hair? It's going to bug me all the time if it stays like that," I say.
"Sure," she answers.
I take a pair of scissors off the floor and start cutting the hair at the back of her head. Since it's so uneven that I can't save much of it, and have to cut her black hair closer to her scalp. Her bangs aren't as badly cut though, so I just make her hair slope down from the back. She still has bangs covering her left eye, they just aren't as long now that's all.
Dropping the scissors, I step back and study her hair to see if it looks good. It looks good enough, but then again, it doesn't really matter what a soldier's hair looks like.
"Are you happy now?" I ask.
"Hell yeah!" Cally exclaims.
"Rachel, I think it's okay to look back now," I say to the blonde girl.
She looks back, "are we gonna go do something not gross now?"
"Yeah," I laugh, "I think we're good now,"
Walking out of the dorm, Cally pretty much stops dead. She has a smile on her face and seems to be staring at something on the training field. I scan the area quickly to find what she's staring at; and I learn pretty quickly: Eren.
I go close to her ear, "ooh look, Cally has a lil' crush!" I whisper and giggle a little bit.
"So?" she giggles back.
"Is that going to be our new mission?" Rachel asks, who obviously heard us.
"Mission: nice cup-o-Jaeger is a go!" I laugh at the stupid mission name.
"That is probably the stupidest name I've ever heard!" Rachel looks at me.
"Well I don't see you guys coming up with any!"

***

We spent the rest of the day sitting on the dining hall porch, telling stupid jokes, helping Cally figure figure out what we're gonna do about her crush, and then of course shutting up whenever other people walked by.
I love the Training Corps. It's tough, but there are times that are so happy and nothing could be better, so much better I can almost forget about what happened a few years ago. It really makes me wonder about what the full responsibility of full fledged soldier life will be like; will we have time to laugh? Time to act like an idiot? Not have to worry about dying?
Well, only time will tell...
