Things has changed. A lot. Ranae's still striving for him. And as much as Colleen tries to help, they're both getting nowhere. But Toby has been getting somewhere. Ranae has kept on going and doing what she has to do. Colleen told Ranae about dancing with Ms. E and they both go to practice everyday afterschool. They work hard, play hard. They were performing tomorrow for the school and parents. One in the morning during school time, and one performance in the evening for the parents and others. Toby is just another thing thats on her mind right now. Other than that, she's just doing her. No troubles, no worries. Not until now.
Ranae and Penelope walked into the cafeteria looking around for open seats. But not Colleen, she zoomed straight over to Annika's section, while Penelope went to sit with the 7JJ girls and Krista, leaving Ranae alone again. Colleen sat right next to Annika. Ranae looked over. They couldn't stop talking. She felt a wave of jealousy rushing over as she looked away. But little did she know, Colleen was doing this for her.
"Its Shakira in the 8th grade," Annika blurted. "Toby and Shakira are dating." She tried not to make eye contact with Colleen as she talked.
"Who's Shakira?" Colleen talked back as fast as she could not caring if she were studdering or pronouncing her words correctly.
"Kyra's best friend!" Annika pulled out her iPhone and shoved a picture of a light skinned girl with a short band, hair down, a blue sweater with a polo shirt, jeans, and blue and white sneakers just like Toby's in Colleen's face. "We used to talk, take pictures, and everything but now I'm planning for that skeet to get hit by the bus!"
"Wait wait wait," Colleen said still staring at the screen. "She's ugly and oh my god. Seriously though? They're not cute at all. I can't believe this."
"I know right, she looks like a freakin' raccoon!" Just then somebody called Annika's name and she sprung up still babbling about Shakira. Colleen had a look that said it all on her face. She didn't know how to say this to Ranae. Would she react the same way Annika did? She wasn't that naiive, was she?
Ranae was prancing around Ms. E's classroom talking about Chandler Riggs. It was 3:30 p.m., and all the desks and chairs were pushed towards the chalk board and projector for space to dance. Ms. E and the others had gone out to the store, leaving Ranae and Colleen alone with Ms. Donino always coming in and out. The room smelled of chalk, dusty books and too much math. "So what show is Chandler Riggs in again?" Colleen asked pretending she was actually interested.
"The Walking Dead duh," Ranae replied dramatically trying to spin with her legs in the air like a ballerina.
"Oh, I thought he was like some Disney star or something like that." Colleen was doodling on the chalkboard.
"So what was so important about you and Annika's conversation today at lunch that you had to leave me without telling me anything?" She sounded as if she were Colleen's mom.
"Oh... This girl named Shakira in the 8th grade." Colleen started to draw faster.
"So you had to ditch me to gossip about some 8th grader?"
"You don't understand."
"Oh I think I understand clearly, actually." She stopped dancing and crossed her arms over her chest.
"If you really understood you would've knew that she's going out with Toby!" It came out like a confession.
"Now since your mad at me your going to say something like that?!"
Colleen turned around. "It's true. I wouldn't leave for anything else," she said guiltily.
Ranae looked devastated. "Let me see her." She said quietly. Colleen pulled out her big touch screen phone and went on Shakira's page on Facebook.
"Here," she said. Ranae grabbed the phone and started swiping through her pictures.
"She's ugly right?" Colleen added trying to make her feel a little better.
"Not really," Ranae said her eyes still on the screen. "She's actually pretty." Ranae knew she didn't like Shakira of course, but she wasn't going to lie just because of that like Annika and Colleen did. She always told the truth if necessary no matter how bad it was.
Then Ranae started scrolling down her page. Colleen looked in to see what was on there too. They passed a few pictures and posts, then she stopped. Only to see a collage of her posted by Toby. The caption read: "Okay so boom. Happy birthday to my baby Shakira. I love you so much. We've been through a lot. Had our fights and everything. But that doesn't stop me from loving you the way I do. Love you Kira." And the rest had heart emojis. Ranae shook as she dared to look at the comments. Shakira commented on the post saying: "Aww, love you too babe." Colleen looked up only to see Ranae grabbing her stuff and heading out the door.
"Ranae wait!" Colleen cried as she tried to catch up with her. But it was too late. Ranae was gone.
