Question 30: When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
Blaine entered the apartment to the sound of sobbing coming from the bedroom. He found Kurt in bed in a fetal position crying his eyes out. Without hesitation, Blaine threw his things away and went to hug Kurt from behind, who got stiff for a second and then relaxed in Blaine's embrace.
"You shouldn't be seeing this", exclaimed Kurt between sobs.
"Why not, gorgeous? How many times have we seen each other cry and embraced the other in times of need?"
Kurt's answer was more crying. However, he adjusted his body against Blaine's. Blaine held him tight and began to nuzzle and kiss the top of Kurt's head. Kurt murmured something:
"You shouldn't be comforting me because I'm crying about the wedding. I'm getting cold-feet."
Blaine felt like laughing, but he wanted to respect his fiancé. He began nuzzling behind Kurt's ear:
"You have cold feet alright, but it's not about the wedding."
Kurt pouted:
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because you don't doubt that you love me."
Kurt turned to face him:
"Who are you and what have you done to my Blaine?"
Blaine smiled and pressed his lips quickly against Kurt's:
"Call it personal growth, sweetheart. Besides, your play opening tomorrow is the reason behind all this sobbing."
Kurt's hand came to Blaine's cheek and melted away any doubt he might have felt about his fiancé's previous statement. Blaine had indeed grown, but his insecurities were still lurking somewhere in his mind. Kurt closed the gap between them and went in for a kiss. He touched his forehead to Blaine's and sighed:
"I shouldn't be crying for something that's good."
Blaine felt like teasing him:
"And our wedding is something bad?"
"No! Never! It's just that's normal to feel jitters when such a big life change is ahead."
"Your play is also a big life change, Kurt. There's a lot at stake for your career."
Kurt replied sarcastically:
"Thank you so much for calming me down."
Blaine took Kurt's hand as they exited the taxi and walked towards the theater. Even though they were early, there were already people there. Blaine noticed their names on the marquee, pointed it out to Kurt and saw a tear escaping his fiancé's eye. Blaine squeezed his hand for reassurance. Kurt turned to him smiling but with moist eyes:
"Nervous?"
Blaine snorted:
"I wasn't the one who cried myself to sleep yesterday..."
"I was nervous for you too. You were so reluctant about sending your songs out into the world."
Blaine could feel his cheeks blushing:
"I wonder if this is how it feels like to send a child to college."
"Well, there are some people here we could ask. Look!"
Blaine looked at where Kurt was pointing and saw his mother talking to Burt and Carole. They approached the parent's group.
"Mom! How did you already find Kurt's parents in a crowd?"
Pam smiled and hugged her son:
"Well, it seems like us Ohioans have a radar to finding each other in New York; like you and Kurt."
Kurt came to hug Pam, after hugging his parents, while Blaine went to talk to Burt and Carole, who explained the situation to them:
"Your mother was the first one here – we were the second – and by the proud look on her face, she had to be the mother of someone related to the play."
Burt passed his arm around Carole's shoulder and followed on with the explanation:
"And Carole - being who she is - introduced us as Kurt's parents."
This time a couple of tears escaped Kurt's eyes. Blaine kissed his cheek:
"Gorgeous, why so emotional?"
"It's... it's just that I can't believe this day has finally come; that you guys flew from Ohio to see it and that Carole introduced herself as my parent."
Carole took Kurt's hand – who Blaine wasn't willing to let go from his embrace – and now they both were crying. Pam rested her hand in her son's shoulder:
"I wouldn't miss it for the world. My son and my future son-in-law have created a work of art together; how could I not be in the front row to witness history."
"Come on, mom; it's not history! I mean, Kurt's name will soon be on several marquees all over Broadway, but my songs..."
Kurt stopped him:
"Are going to be sung in all households across America! You are a brilliant composer, Blee."
"You say it because you love me."
"Again, who are you and what have to done with my Blaine?"
Kevin from production interrupted their conversation by approaching them with a clipboard:
"Sorry, Mr. Hummel and Mr. Anderson, we would like to show some things to have your approval before showtime. Could you come with me?"
The boys said their goodbyes to their parents, promising they'd be sitting near each other during the show. Kurt and Blaine walked hand-in-hand backstage. They were practically alone in the little walk and Blaine shook Kurt's hand in his:
"We saw so many kinds of tears these last few days..."
Kurt teased him:
"There'll be many more as our wedding day approaches."
Soon, they were summoned to a dressing room to find all the cast and crew reunited. As they walked in, a round of applause emerged. The boy playing Young Toronto walked towards them holding two bouquets almost as big as him. He awkwardly maneuvered to hand one to Kurt.
"Is this for me, Harry?"
The boy smiled proudly:
"Yes, Mr. Hummel. And the other one is for you, Mr. Anderson."
Blaine hoped Kurt hadn't seen he was wiping a tear. Luckily for him, Kurt was paying attention to the boy:
"You can call us Kurt and Blaine. You all can. I really wanted to thank each and every one of you for all the effort you put into making this play a reality. It's only one night, unfortunately. Or fortunately, I don't think my nerves could handle more than this. However, you are making my dream come true. I want to thank everyone, but particularly my fiancé. Blaine, dear, you held my hand – physically and metaphorically – through every step of the way. I know it's my McArthur grant, but without your songs The Adventures of Toronto could never take flight."
Blaine kissed his fiancé under thunderous applause for the first time that night.
