Question 20: What does friendship mean to you?
Blaine was jingling his door keys on his way to open their apartment. It had been a long day, but he'd see his Kurt now. Blaine couldn't care less if people kept saying their honeymoon phase would soon be over, that living together too soon in their relationship would bring them problems, and other things he was used to worry about himself. Kurt reassured him every night that only they could know what they were living, and that other people could just go f... ind other things to talk about.
Blaine was learning to not listen to other people and the voices inside his head. Sometimes, during the day when they were apart, Blaine would hesitate and catch himself doubting Kurt's love for him; but all he needed was to arrive home and see the man he loved, the man he'd do anything to please. His best friend, his Kurt.
He opened up the door and found Kurt inside, deep in talk with someone on the phone. The taller boy turned to him, smiled, and winked. It was Blaine needed to put all hesitation aside. It didn't matter what Kurt felt, he'd love him for the rest of his life. Hopelessly devoted to him.
Kurt finished up his call:
"Okay, Cedes; I'll see you later."
He opened his arms wide for Blaine, who ran into his boyfriend's embrace. Kurt quickly pecked his lips before posing his head on Blaine's shoulder:
"How was your day, sweetie?"
"Better now."
"Aw, you're so cute."
Kurt's lips met his again before the paler boy broke their embrace and walked to his room. Blaine followed him:
"Were you talking to Mercedes?"
"Yes, she's in town and we're meeting later tonight. She wants to gossip about my MacArthur grant; you know... face to face."
Blaine tried to hide his jealousy:
"And where are you going?"
Something is his tone made Kurt stop choosing clothes and turn to him:
"Don't pout, Blee; you can come with us. Mercedes loves you."
"I'm not pouting" said Blaine pouting.
Kurt chuckled and walked to sit on Blaine's lap:
"Yes, you are, but don't worry. You're still adorable."
He kissed Blaine again. Blaine felt more at ease with their physical proximity:
"I'm just jealous, I really didn't want to share you tonight."
Kurt begun to caress his gelled curls:
"You know how important Mercedes is to me and how difficult it is for her to find time in her schedule. Come with us. And when we get home, I promise to compensate you for the time you" Kurt made air quotes with his fingers "shared me. You know I'm all yours."
Blaine initiated a kiss this time. Then he smiled genuinely:
"No, you go with your friend. I know how important your friends from the Glee club are. Be whole there for Mercedes and then came home to me."
"Always."
Kurt kissed him and went back to choosing an outfit. Blaine watched him mesmerized:
"I think I'm also jealous of you keeping in touch with your high school friends. We have a Warblers text group, without Sebastian - thank God – but I hardly speak there. And I met my college friends just after that meerkat broke up with me and left me homeless in New York. I guess I wasn't the best company..."
"You have Rachel, and she brought you to me."
"Yeah, but you are my boyfriend now. I need someone to brag about you with."
"Aw, I'm almost cancelling my night out with Cedes to be with you."
Blaine felt guilty:
"Don't you dare. You go out and have fun. I'll be okay."
Kurt looked at him with worry in his eyes:
"You don't sound like someone who's okay with being alone..."
Blaine got up and grabbed Kurt's waist:
"I am. Really."
A bit skeptical, Kurt gave him one last kiss before disappearing through the door.
After a reheat of the leftovers of Kurt's fabulous chicken pie from their dinner the night before, Blaine sat down to watch TV. He browsed Netflix for a while, but nothing caught his eye. He took his phone out to search for a film recommendation and entered Instagram.
The first photo to pop out was of Wes, his fellow Warbler and high school best friend – before the one he didn't want to name – doing a tbt of when he got engaged. Blaine had congratulated him through Instagram and everything, but he felt nostalgic. The guy had been a great friend to him, the first person in school he had came out too and now...
Thrusting a gut instinct, Blaine called Wes. After a couple of rings, came a voice from the other side of the phone:
"Blaine?"
He got nervous all of a sudden:
"Hey...Wes... long time no see."
"It's Blaine-boy. What's new with you?"
Blaine relaxed a little, Wes was even using his old nickname. Maybe he was welcoming his call.
"Well, I told the group I'm in a new relationship..."
"Thank the Lord! I didn't want to talk at the time because you were head over heels for the guy, but that Sebastian was a pain in the ass. We only put up with him because he was your boyfriend. I hope your new man threats you right."
Blaine chuckled; Wes had really been his friend in the past. He had been liked.
"Kurt is amazing. He puts my happiness before his. I mean, I do too. In a healthy way."
"No need for stuttering, Blaine. You sound very fond of him."
"I am."
"It's good to see, I mean, to hear your smile again."
Blaine let out a breath he never knew he was holding.
"Speaking of seeing, can we... can we... see each other sometime?"
He was ready to listen to a moment of silence while Wes considered how to escape his proposition, but his answer was quite the contrary:
"Of course! I miss you, bud."
Blaine got himself more at ease on the couch:
"What about next weekend? Are you still in New York? I want to properly congratulate you on your engagement."
"That would be great, man!"
Kurt would be proud of him for reaching out for an old friend. But, more than that, Blaine was proud of himself. Maybe he was beginning to heal with his wonderful boyfriend by his side.
