In all the years Damon has been alive, he only had two regrets. Their names were Abby Bennett and Alina Lowell. He had changed both women into vampires without thinking of how it would affect the people who cared about them. He wouldn’t tell Bonnie this but even though she eventually forgave him for changing her mother, he still dreamt about the look in Abby’s eyes before he snapped her neck. Magic was her life. While she could no longer practice it before then, turning her into a vampire made the separation from her powers permanent. He knew what it was like to be close to something and yet still so far away.

Bonnie opened up to him about what it felt like to not be able to do magic anymore. She said the earth called to her every night but she could never answer it; she could no longer summon the magic it had to offer. Knowing that magic was something that she was born with; something she was destined to control pained her more than anything because without her powers, she felt like nothing.

Though he assured her that she was more than her powers, he couldn’t imagine what she was going through. Even still, there was still a chance that Bonnie could get her powers back but her mother couldn’t. And he regretted taking that away from her. Only then he didn’t think about what he was doing. He just wanted to protect the people he loved.

He wanted to protect Elena.

He would do anything for her and he has.

She was the love of his life.

But Alina Lowell was before Elena. He turned her for his own personal gain. Not that he hadn’t done that many times before. Every kill he’s made, he lost count of how many there were, was to satisfy his hunger, his anger, his pain. It was all about him and Alina had been no different. The only difference is, he didn’t kill her for any of those reasons. Though he wished that he had. Only because turning her into a vampire didn’t turn out to be the best of ideas.

“Are you going to answer my question or are we playing the silent game?”

They had ridden in silence up until that point. It was a short drive home but knowing that Bonnie was pissed at him, made the ride seem a little longer. Even when they didn’t talk, when he didn’t steal a glance at her, he was aware of her presence. He could hear her heart beating in her chest, constantly. Hear the way she bit her lip, her controlled breaths, and every blink of her eye. It wasn’t safe being in such a confined space with Bonnie Bennett. If he wasn’t careful, her entire existence would drive him mad. And he’d let her.

“What do you want me to say?” It was a stupid question. He knew what she wanted to hear. She wanted to know why he turned Alina into a vampire. It was a simple question but the answer wasn’t something he wanted to go into.

“Aleah would have never went into foster care if it weren’t for you. She’d probably still have her mother….”

“Alina was going to die anyways!”

“Oh, so you did it to save her life?” He heard her eyes roll. It sounded like thunder in his ears. “Right. Like I’m supposed to believe that Damon Salvatore went around the hospital turning people into vampires just so they wouldn’t have to die. You always have a hidden agenda, Damon. Always.”
