"You should wear your hair like this more often?" Damon said, smirking to himself.
He could practically see the steam coming out of her ears, as she gripped the steering wheel. His fingers twitched, itching to reach over and tug at the pigtail blowing in the wind.
"You look so cute," he continued, licking his bottom lip. He could still taste her there, her blood, her scent, the salt of her skin, everything. If she were a bottle of wine from a good year, an alcoholic would not be able to resist her, but here he was, sitting beside her in such a confined space, her essence surrounding him like the smoke from an atomic bomb. He didn't have to force himself to breathe through his mouth when he was around her, the hunger inside of him had been sated. Just one taste of her blood made him feel like a new man, like he was in control of his life, and not the monster that lived inside of him.
This was a perk of being linked and so was the warmth prickling up his arms like a wildfire. He might not be able to hear her thoughts but he could feel every emotion his witch had after he consumed her blood. His body reacted differently to each emotion and the heat dancing over his skin was a reaction he was all too familiar with, especially since Bonnie was always annoyed with him for one reason or another.
He heard her groan before it left her mouth. "When I eventually kick your ass in UNO, I'm going to make you shave your eyebrows off," she said, through gritted teeth.
Damon chuckled, thinking back to the eight rounds of the infamous card game they played to take a break from driving. They had been on the road for most of the day and the deck of red cards that was hidden away in the glove department was the only reprieve they had from the monotony of their trip to see Colette and her coven or whatever the hell they called themselves.
He pretended like he didn't know how to play and then beat her every single time. She wanted to give up on the second round but he told her that she could make him do anything she wanted him to do. That sparked her interest more than he thought it would. He almost let her win just out of curiosity but being able to put her hair in the same style he saw in the photo album at Sheila's was worth the win.
"Women would still find me attractive so it wouldn't matter to me," he mused.
"We'll see about that," Bonnie murmured. And, just so you know, I'm taking these out when we get there. Colette and her coven won't take me seriously if I show up looking like a three year old!"
Now it was his time to groan. "Don't say that, Bon Bon. I keep picturing you in your cheerleading outfit with that same hairstyle and now I feel like a perverted old man."
"It serves you..." she started, but she never got a chance to finish the sentence. Her foot stepped down on the brakes, hard; causing his body to jerk forward. It's a good thing Bonnie made him put his seatbelt on. Buckle up, it's the law, she said, as if a car accident would be enough to kill him.
The sudden stop was a grade A high-killer. He lost all interest in teasing her about her hair the moment he heard her heart pick up the pace in her chest. It was beating so fast that it sounded like it was running a marathon. Soft lips parted, green eyes on alert, his witch looked like she saw a ghost.
"Damon," she managed, his name sounding like a gasp of air on her tongue. "There's someone..."
He didn't need her to finish. He could see what she was referring to. There, laying in the middle of the road, not even a foot away from where the car came to a stop was a man. He was dressed in black from head to toe and looked as pale as a corpse.
"Stay in the car," he gritted out, reaching for his door.
Bonnie stopped him, hands forming a vice around his arm. "You're the one who should be staying in the car, Damon."
"The guy is laying in the middle of the freaking road, Bonnie. I've pulled that trick a thousand times to know what happens when you go check to see if they're alright. He will snap your neck the moment you get close enough for him to grab you and...I'm not taking that chance."
Damon didn't wait for her to protest. He was out of the car before she could hiss his name.
"Okay, show's over pal," he called. "If you try anything, I'll rip your..."
The hand that curled around his neck stopped his threat short. "I can say the same to you, my friend."
Damon couldn't recognize the voice but he didn't need to know that that the bastard he was about to kill was no friend of his. It didn't take him long to pull himself out of the chokehold and throw the other guy to the ground. He was just about to bash his head into the ground and rip his heart out when his eyes registered the guy's face. It was the guy that was laying in the middle of the road pretending to be dead.
Damon didn't know how he got the jump on him, and he didn't care. He just wanted to kill him and get back in the car. Bonnie and him had places to go, people to see after all. They didn't have time time for He was going to do just that when the choking sensation returned, only instead of a hand, magic was constricting his breathing. He fell to his knees, clutching at his throat as if doing that would open up his airways. When a shadow fell over him, he looked up just in time to see the stranger standing over him with blood dripping out of his nose and a smirk on his face that he wanted to tear off with his fangs.
"So it's what they say about blood bonds. I didn't think the Bennett witch would be able to pull it off."
"Hasn't anyone ever told you not to underestimate a Bennett witch?" Bonnie responded, pushing her hand through the One Direction reject's chest, severing the hold he had on Damon.
"Either you finish him right now or I'm going to rip his head off."
"Not yet, Damon. He's the first person we've seen in Mystic Falls in months. I need some answers first."
"You might not want to kill me," the stranger said, blood spilling out of his mouth with each word. "You need me."
"I'll be the one to decide if I need you or not. Who are you?" Bonnie hissed.
"I can see why you're the Bennett witch that survived. You got a lot of fight in you. I like that. I like that a..."
"Answer my question now. We don't have all day."
The stranger smiled, flashing his reddened teeth at Damon. "Your girlfriend is bossy. I can tell who wears the pants in this..." Bonnie twisted her hand, pushing it a little deeper. "Okay, okay. The name's Malachai," he choked out. "But you can call me Kai. Nice to make your acquaintance, Bonnie Bennett. I've been looking forward to this day for quite some time now."
Damon didn't notice the blood had disappeared until it was too late. One moment Bonnie had her hand buried into his back, in the next Kai had her pressed to his front with a blade at her throat.
Damon took a step forward, fist clenched at his side. "Maybe ripping your head off would be too merciful of a death. I'm going to take my sweet, sweet time killing you."
"You take one more step forward and I'll cut her pretty little neck open." Kai ran the blade across her exposed skin for emphasis, careful not to draw any blood. "I don't want to kill her but I will if you make me. And what a shame it would be to lose another Bennett witch. You're the last of your kind aren't you, Bonnie? That makes the two of us then. We're going to be such good friends."

So, I am aware that I didn't finish this before the show ended. I apologize for not updating in a few months but I am in my first year of law school so I don't have much free time to write as I used to.
I wanted to create a different version of what happened when Bonnie and Damon got stuck in an alternate Mystic Falls but I still want to keep some of the elements of the show the same...like Kai. He was a very interesting character that I can't wait to explore in this story.
Thanks for reading!
