Cole was startled awake when his older brother, Aiden, hit the dashboard of the car. "Wake up, dude! We're finally here!" Aiden shouted, shaking the shoulder of the half-conscious Cole. And Aiden just so happened to be right. After the long ten hour drive, the pair had arrived at their weekend getaway before Cole headed off to college. A string of cozy looking cabins bordered a beautiful greenish-blue lake, fluffy green pine trees stood guard behind the cabins, almost like a wall. Birds chirped happily and the wind blew gently, the place couldn't look more serene.
"Alright, dude. We need to get our bags inside the cabin and how 'bout we do some fishing once we get everything unpacked?" Aiden asked.
Cole agreed and smiled a mischievous grin, he had always managed to catch more fish than his older brother, and it drove Aiden mad. Cole needed the pick me up. The thought of heading to college soon shook him, the thought of adulting was absolutely terrifying to him. But, it was nice to spend his last summer as a kid with his fun older brother.
The two unpacked their things when Aiden got a buzz on his phone, he let out an exasperated sigh."What's up? Why'd you groan like that?"
"My boss texted me. I have a shit load of stuff to complete before I go back to work on Monday"
"It's only Friday though. Can't you wait until tomorrow to do all of that?"
"Sorry, Cole, but I've got to get a head start, so I don't forget. I promise, we'll do whatever you want tomorrow"
Cole's smile dropped, but it wasn't all that bad, they had the cabin until Sunday. How long could Aiden's work possibly take to complete?
While Aiden tapped away on his laptop, Cole packed up his fishing gear and headed out the door. He wasn't going to let this stand in the way of him having some fun. He set up his gear and unfolded his chair next to the lakeside. Cole whistled happily to himself while casting his line, but he stopped when a shiver went down his spine. Something was off, it was completely silent. The birds stopped chirping, the wind had stopped whistling. Even the other inhabitants of the other cabins couldn't be heard. It was only Cole and the woods. The trees didn't seem as inviting as they had at the beginning of the trip. A dark aura protruded from the wood, like if Cole stayed there any longer, he would be consumed by it.
Cole finally was able to avert his gaze from the woods, he blinked, he blinked twice. It was night. How could it possibly be night? It wasn't even three when him and Aiden got there. The sun was even high in the sky when he first set up near the lake.
A small part of Cole was relieved though, he could hear crickets chirping and the sound of the cabin inhabitants talking, playing sport outside their cabin, grilling, and anything in between.
Cole picked up his things and headed back towards the cabin, he was incredibly tired for some odd reason.
When Cole opened the door, Aiden popped his head up from his laptop. "Cole! Where the fuck were you? It's nine, bro, what were you doing?"
Cole shrugged and claimed that he was fishing, not wanting to trouble his brother. He hadn't brought back any fish, so he was worried that Aiden would take notice. Luckily, Aiden took the excuse and continued tacking on the keys of his laptop.
Cole let out a sigh of relief and headed to his bedroom, promptly passing out on his bed.Cole stood next to a lake, eerie steam rising from it, covering his feet like a thick carpet, a pitch dark sky looming above him. "I'm scared" he thought, moving towards his cabin.
CRACK
A stick snapped from behind Cole, freezing him in his place. He knew he had to run, but there was no use, it felt like he was caught in ice. Heavy breathing sounded from behind him, it sounded urgent...hungry. A hand was placed on Cole's shoulder, gripping it tightly, sinking its nails deeply into the skin. Cole felt the blood drip down his arm, he knew he was done for. Hot breath hit the back of his neck, what felt like a tongue sampling its prey. Sharp needles dug into Cole's neck, causing blood to gush from the wound. Everything around Cole was fading, a weak sob escaped his mouth before everything went black.
