"But Jamie, you can't leave! It's our birthday!" Nancy cries out as she holds on to the back of my leg for dear life.

"Nance I'm coming back alright? I just have some baseball stuff to take care of." I say as I pick her up from the floor, which she had thrown herself on dramatically to "play dead".

"Nancy c'mon stop. You know I don't think it's funny when you do that." I say a lot less playful than usual.

A few moments later she begins coughing intensely, and for a second I'm worried until she asks me to come closer so she can whisper her "last words" in my ear.

"Good night Nancy." I say chuckling, as I put her down and watch as she folds her arms and frowns up her face, knowing her plan to keep me home failed miserably.

"I love you alright? I'll be home soon and if you aren't sleeping I'll play dolls with you."

"REALLY?! You promise Jamie?!" she shouts in excitement.

"Yes but never tell anyone. And save me the doll with the pink dress."

"Lola? or Gladys?" she replies with a lifted eyebrow.

"Hmm, Gladys. Lola's hair smells like peanut butter." I respond, whispering so no one but Nancy could hear how un cool I was.

"Love you honey, be safe. I want you back here by twelve am I understood?"

I plant a kiss on her cheek before nodding in agreement with my mom.

"Alright. Goodbye everyone." I say, walking out of my door and into Curtis's navy blue Chevrolet Bel Air.

"C'mon princess Martin hop in!" Curtis yells from the front seat.

"Hey, this princess can run circles around you on the field Mr. Big shot captain."

"Ohhhhhh!" Everyone replies as Curtis and I laughed at each other.

Even though I got upset with him earlier, there was something about Curtis that ensured me he was a decent guy.

If he and Rosie were going together at least they'd be lucky to have each other.

I don't know why I keep trying to convince myself of that.

"Hi James." I hear come from the left of me simultaneously.

"Hey ladies, you both look nice."

The twins giggle at my comments and reply. "Thank you, so do you."

I look around after feeling the motion of the car stop.

We were in what appeared to be a neighborhood, but who could tell at eight o'clock p.m.

My mind wandered back to Rosie, thinking about where she might be.

Everyone was here, even that Rudolf guy who tried to start shit with me on the first day.

Before I know it, I find myself curious enough to ask the question out loud.

"Hey, where's Ro-". My sentence and train of thought are cut short as a light comes on on one of the houses front porch, and there stood undeniably the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on.

"Wow." I let out in a low breath, not worried about who can hear me or who can't.

Her hair was in an updo like before, but she had a few curly strands peeking out in the back and front.

This hairstyle really complimented her facial features, as if any other style didn't do that already.

Her dress was all black with no straps holding it up. It hugged her slim body just right, and she had on a pair of black high heels to match.

She was wearing her signature white pearls and earrings, and ruby lipstick that took over her full lips.

Before I knew it Curtis was on the steps of her house, greeting who I believe to be her mother or sister with a hug and kiss on the cheek.

I roll my eyes and shift in my seat.

I look down and fidget with my hands, when suddenly I feel a chilling sensation down my spine.

I look up to see everyone in the car staring at me, and I wondered how long they'd been doing this for.

"What?" I ask, knowing exactly why their eyes had been on me.

Finally, Rosie and Curtis approach the car, and I watch as he helps her climb inside.

"I saved you a seat next to me." He whispers before starting the car up.

It took everything in me not to yell "can we just go?" at that very moment.

Finally, we take off and head to wherever the party was going to be taking place.

I knew that tonight would be the night that my little "crush" on Rosie would have to end.

She and Curtis obviously have something going on, and I didn't have time for Rosie right now anyway.

This year is going be crucial for my baseball career, and I know what I have to do.

I just wish she'd stop being the reason I looked forward to attending Redwood.
