                           Rosie's Pov

"Hold still Rosie." Momma commands after sticking me with the sewing needle for the thirtieth time this morning.

"I don't know how this dress isn't drenched in blood." I utter sarcastically.

"You better hope it isn't, because you won't be getting another one." And a part of me almost believes her, but  I know she loves me too much for that to be true.

"So how have things been with the boy?" She questions and I honestly thought she'd never ask.

I love the fact that I can tell my mom anything. If she hadn't brought it up I would have.

"It's going great mom." I begin and instantly feel delighted at the thought of him.

"It's only been three weeks and I feel like I've known him forever." I mindlessly clutch onto my pearls as I reminisce on the events of these past few weeks.

Since my first visit at the Martin residence James and I have spent everyday together, and each day he's made it his business to initiate the plans.

I don't know where he gets the guts to simply come up and ask me, whenever I try I can only get out half of a sentence before saying forget it because of nerves.

But I admire and appreciate that quality in him. He's sure of himself. He approaches me with such a graceful confidence. Not like he's trying too hard either.

"Has he asked you to the dance?" Momma asks, pulling me out of my daydream.

"Not yet." I reply, trying to hold back the fact that I'm a little worried he won't.

"Well don't worry yourself." My mother says as if she was reading my mind. "I can tell he likes you."

And with that, she finishes the last details on my dress.

"It's beautiful momma." I murmur.

"You make it beautiful." She replies, admiring her work in the mirror.

"Come on, we don't want to be late." I rush out of my dress for the dance and into my outfit for church.

"Momma, which one? The light blue or purp-" I'm caught off guard by my father's angry expression as he sits on our couch reading the Sunday paper.

"Isn't this that teacher of yours?" He questions sternly, and as he flips the paper over my entire body goes still.

"Ku Klux Klan members take a stand" written before my eyes in bold lettering.

"We want our town back!" I couldn't believe what I was reading, so I stopped. Before I could return the paper to my father, my body came to a halt as I examined the picture that was plastered next to the news. An army of men, hatefully storming the streets, and in the back was the person who made so much sense being apart of something like that, but no sense at all at the same time.

Michael.

"Take it." I say to my father, turning away from him and the newspaper as I hold back my tears.

"At service today, we'll pray for them." I finalize, picking up the two dresses and heading back upstairs.

I know I shouldn't do this, but I'll secretly be praying that daddy never finds out that Michael is James' step father too.
