The Call

"Don't worry, Sophie, everything will be okay." I heard Renesme tell me in a comforting voice.
I was seated in the back of a pickup truck looking absentmindedly out the window.
I wanted to lash out. To tell Renesme that there's no way she could tell me not to 'worry'.
All I could do was worry.
Everyone was out there risking their lives for me and I was sitting here feeling useless because there was nothing I could do to keep the people I loved safe.
Emmett, the Cullens, my mother and the rest of the volturi who had left Aro...
What was to happen next?
They were fighting for me.
Because of me.
How could I ever live if any of them got hurt.
Alec... In Victoria's clutches.
I couldn't let him die.
I just couldn't.
The worry and concern ate at me and I just prayed to God that He would keep them all safe.
"We're almost at the airport." Jacob announced, speaking to Renesme more than he did to me.
I was tired of protesting.
I had already brought up how leaving Seattle was a terrible idea.
If Victoria was as psychotic as James was, she would keep hunting me down.
I didn't want to run and leave my friends and family behind like this.
Renesme turned from the passenger seat to look at me and give me a small smile.
"We'll be back." She spoke.

"Once the others have taken care of the newborns and Victoria, we'll come straight back here. When it's safe."
But would it ever be safe? I wanted to ask.
"Can we make a stop at the next station?" I asked Jacob.
He looked at me through the rearview mirror.
"Why?" He asked suspiciously.
"I-I want to use the phone booth. I-I want to call my dad."
Jacob turned to look at Renesme.
She placed a hand on his arm.
It's like they were having a private conversation.
I figured they probably were with Renesme's ability and all.
"It's risky." Jacob murmured.
"I just want to talk to him. To hear his voice." I spoke up.
I didn't add that this might be the last time I would get the chance.
"Why don't you use one of our phones."
"He will track it." I spoke up.
Years of being the Chief of police's daughter had taught me that much. "Sure he'll figure out which pay phone I'm using but it will be more ominous."
Jacob started to say something but Renesme cut him off by squeezing his hand. The one that wasn't holding the steering wheel.
"We can risk a few minutes." She told him. "She atleast deserves to talk to her father."
Jacob gave his wife a long look before sighing.
"Fine. Five minutes, tops, then we're off."
I almost choked out a sob of relief. "Thank you."
We drove on for a couple more miles and finally came up to the filling station.
"I'll get some gas. Renesme will go with you." Jacob spoke.
I guess they didn't trust me enough to not run off.
Renesme got out of the vehicle the same time I did.
She held my hand as we walked to the phone booth. I don't know if it was to keep me from running or just to offer some support.
Considering it was Renesme, probably the latter.
I didn't realise how nervous I was until I reached out to pick up the black, glossy handpiece of the telephone and realised my hand was shaking.
Renesme seemed to notice and took out a coin before placing it in the slot. She grabbed the handheld and placed a comforting hand on my arm.
"I know it's hard, Sophie." And she really did sound like she knew exactly how I felt.
She handed me the handheld but didn't let go.
"You can't tell him where we are, Sophie."
I sighed. "I know."
Renesme frowned as if she didn't want to be the one to tell me these things.
"He thinks you've been kidnapped. You have to let him believe that, okay?"
I nodded even though I was fighting back tears.
Maybe this was a bad idea.
Maybe I shouldn't be making this call.
Maybe I should just let my father believe that I was gone.
The sooner he knew it. The sooner, hopefully, he'd be able to get over it.
But I needed this.
This could be the last time I got to speak to him.
I needed to say my goodbyes.
Renesme let go of the hand held, letting me have it. I started dialling the familiar number.
It occurred to me that he might not answer. Then what would I do?
I couldn't leave a message. Knowing my dad, that's all he'd need to keep trying to find me.
He would keep relistening to it obsessively, thinking there was some kind of way he could use it to find me.
Because that was my father. He tried to protect his little girl in any way he could.
The phone started ringing.
"I'll give you some privacy." Renesme spoke before offering a reassuring smile. She started walking back to the truck
I watched her, wondering if I should call her back.
Her presence somehow made me feel calmer. Or as calm as I could get in this situation.
"Hello." I was brought back to reality by my father's familiar voice.
For a moment I froze. I don't know what I was expecting. No, I did.
I was expecting never to hear his voice again. The same voice that comforted me when I fell off my bike and bruised my knee. When I lost my mother. The voice that had seen me through breakups and heartaches.
My father. My dad.
"Hello?" His voice became more impatient. "Hello?... Hello? Listen, if this is some kind of prank, I have better-"
"Dad?" I choked out with a sob. The tears I had been trying to fight came streaming down.
There was silence on the other end but only for a little while.
"Sophie? Oh Soph... Kiddo? Is that you?"
I nodded then realised that he couldn't see me.
"Yes, dad, it's me."
I heard s choking sound escape his throat.
"Oh Soph, baby.... Y-you don't know how worried I've been. I thought - where are you? Come on... Tell me where you are baby. Tell me what happened. I-i'll come get you."
For a minute I thought I wouldn't be able to speak again.
"I can't." I choked out.
"What do you mean you can't, baby?" He asked, his voice panicky. "I can find you. Does someone have you? It's okay baby, you don't have to be scared. Just tell me. I'll find you." His voice was quick... Desperate.
This was a mistake. Was I so selfish that I chose to put my father through this? Like dangling a piece of bread in front of a starving man with no intention of giving it to him.
I shouldn't have called. It just hurt more for the both of us.
"I-I just wanted you to know that none of this is your fault so don't you dare beat yourself up over this. Okay dad? I'm fine, okay? I'm fine."
"Sophie. Just tell me where you are... Please." He begged.
I bit my lip and tried miserably to compose myself for his sake.
Even though I told him I was fine, he wouldn't stop looking. That's the kind of dad he was. I was truly blessed to have him.
"I love you dad." I managed to get out.
"Soph? Sophie? No! N-"
I slammed the handheld back in it's place, ending the call.
I felt my knees go weak but before I could fall, Renesme was at my side, holding me up.
I cried into her shoulder and she let me.
She led me back to the truck.
Instead of going back to the passenger seat, she sat in the back with me while Jacob drove silently.
No one spoke and theu both just let me cry and I appreciated that.
I had stopped crying but I felt so empty. So miserable. So useless.
Why did I bring pain and trouble to all the people I love?
Jacob's phone suddenly started ringing, frightening me.
He used his free hand to answer and place it to his ear.
"Hello... Yeah? Alice... What?" He yelled the last part.
I sat up.
"Okay, Alice, slow down... What?"
"Jake? What's going on?" Renesme asked in concern.
Jacobs brows furrowed in concentration as he listened to whatever Alice was telling him.
His eyes suddenly got wide. "A trap?" He asked in shock.
Renesme shot up.
I saw it too. Two pale figures standing in the middle of the road.
"Jacob!" Renesme screamed but it was too late.
The collision came and I only remember screaming as the car overturned.
Renesme wrapped her arms around me. Shielding me.
We landed with a crash. Windows shattered, I didn't feel the impact as much thanks to Renesme. But I was still disoriented. Especially being upside down with all the blood rushing to my head. The seatbelt was the only thing that held me up.
"Nessie! Are you okay?" I heard Jacob yell from the drivers seat.
He was fumbling with the seatbelt. Glass had cut across his copper skin but he didn't seem to care much.
"I'm fine." Renesme spoke. "Sophie?"
"I'm okay. What was that?" I spoke breathlessly.
"The new borns." Jacob growled. "It was all a trap from the beginning. Victoria wanted to separate us and-"
The door to the drivers seat was ripped open and Jacob was yanked out.
"Jake!" Renesme yelled.
Not even a few seconds later, my door was yanked open.
Red eyes were the last thing I saw before everything went black.
