I sat across from him. We were in the lounge.
He didn't look directly at me and I didn't either. I played with my hands to try and distract myself and calm my nerves.
I was suddenly second guessing my decision. It seemed right in the spur of the moment but now I was really regretting it.
The ticking of the clock that hung on the wall was the only thing that could be heard in the room.
I searched my mind for a way to initiate the conversation... but right now, all that I could think about was the weather. It had started raining outside. And I remember someone once telling me that rain was a blessing...
"Say something. Please." He finally spoke. He let out a dry laugh. "At this point I would even pay you to sing the damn alphabet song."
I couldn't help but smile as my mind went back to the day he came to my house in a fit of rage demanding that I make him feel better and of course, all I could suggest was singing the alphabet song.
I finally looked up from my hands. "Emmett." I started. "I... um... wanted to apologise."
He didn't even try to hide his shock. "Sophie, I have put you through hell and back and you want to apologise?" He asked in disbelief.
"It wasn't that bad." I lied, trying to lighten the mood.
His lips formed a straight line.
"I see the way I make you uncomfortable... even when I touch you... I feel like I'm hurting you all over again."Oh he had no idea. I wanted to ask him if that's why he just suddenly up and left the room but I decided against it.
"That's why I wanted to apologise to you, actually." I told him honestly. "Emmett, I know that I've been hurting you too. And honestly... I-I don't know how to not hurt you." I told him.
He didn't say anything but his eyes urged me to go on.
"It's true that you left me and I didn't want you to go. Especially not with Rosalie." I whispered the last part.
"Rosalie isn't even in the picture anymore." He spoke up eagerly.
I nodded. "I know but Rosalie isn't - wasn't the problem either."
"Then what is?" He asked in concern. He got down on his knees in front of me "Tell me and I swear I'll fix it."
"Please could you get up." I told him.
I didn't need him acting like anything was his fault anyway. He just moved closer. He tried to reach for my hands but decided against it probably recalling what had happened when he did it yesterday.
"Tell me what the problem is Sophie." He repeated.
Oh my name leaving his lips...
"Tell me and I'll do everything in my power to fix it."
I shut my eyes, trying to fight back tears.
"You can't."
"I can try."
"No you can't." I spoke with a little more force.
"Emmett, you're not the problem. I am."
"No, don't say that-"
"No Emmett. I am. I honestly-" I let out a sigh. "All this time I've been distancing myself from you and trying to push you away and I've been letting you think it's your fault when all this time it has been mine."
I finally looked up at him. He looked confused.
I sucked in a deep breath before finally letting it out. "I still have feelings for you."
