Levi's POV
A day went by and I couldn't help but feel mixed feelings about Iris. I keep denying that Iris is my daughter, but she is my daughter the more I looked into it. If I was the last man Hanji ever saw before she married to whatever that man's name was... Iris has to be mine.
Just looking at her, I saw nothing but Hanji in there. The same shade of hair and eye colors. Even if she was my daughter, I couldn't find anything that resembled me. Perhaps that's why no one thought that she had a different father. I tried avoiding her in this tiny house, but it's too difficult to do so.
"Levi," Petra puts down my teacup of black tea before she sat down next to me, "you okay?"
I leaned into her closely, sighing heavily. "I'm starting to believe she is my daughter. Petra, I'm so sorry I didn't tell you this. I thought that it was just something that came and happened. It shouldn't have come back to me. I'm faithful to you-."
She kissed my cheek before laying her head on my shoulder. "I believe in you. Besides, she's what? 14? That's so many years that you never saw her. It's a complete shock, and I'm glad I'm here with you, Levi. It'll be alright. Oh- and I do have a quick question for you."
"Which is?"
"If it's proven that she's your daughter, can she stay? If so, you need to be nice."
"Hey- I was cruel like that because I thought it was only her daughter that she sent to me to mess with me. Or just something like that. Never thought it would be my kid. If I had known... then there would've been no doubt I would've taken care of her."
"What are you gonna do?"
"I don't know, Petra. That's me being honest." At that moment, I got a text message. The results were in. "Petra, what do you think? Should I tell Iris that the results are here?"
She nods her head. "I think it's fair. And later- you can tell me more about this woman you spent two months with. She must've been something if her look-alike daughter made you that angry..."
"Don't remind me..."
"I'll get Iris. Do you want me there too when you tell her the results?"
"Only if you want, Petra."
She smiled softly and went upstairs to get the girl from the guest room. As much as I want to check on the results first, I resisted the urge. A pang of guilt continued to bubble in my gut when I truly believe that Iris was my daughter. Now that I think of it, I was too harsh on her. I remember I made her cry because of my rage. If the results say that I am her father, then... I'll do whatever I can to make up for it.
Seconds later, Petra came down with Iris behind her. Her caramel eyes avoiding me when she came down. Yeah, I have to do something about this.
The girls all sat at the dining table. Petra next to me and Iris in front. "Iris," I began, having her finally look up at me, "whatever the outcome is, I want to apologize. I shouldn't have yelled at you. Your mom, Hanji, just made me angry years ago. And I shouldn't have put it onto you. I'm sorry."
She gave a wry smile, pushing her brown hair behind her ears. "I-It's fine, Dad..."
"Don't call me that." I held up my hand to stop her. "Not until we see the results." Iris nodded in compliance when I began to unlock my phone.
A few extra steps, and finally, I opened up the file that held my results. Lots of words that I don't even care about. Then, I found it. How much the DNA between the two of us was similar. And of course...
Just about half of my DNA matched Iris'. I am her father...
