TWENTY. TOORU
━━━━┅━━━┅━━━━

the boy with fluffy brown hair was pushing his grocery cart down the beverage aisle in the supermarket in sendai. he'd been tasked to buy more things for the house by his mother who was too busy with work to do the shopping herself.

it was half-past three in the afternoon of a saturday. they had practice that morning but coach had decided to cut off early for the day. they'd been overworking themselves— the captain, most especially. that's why he used the famous "everyone should rest" excuse to force his captain into submission. oikawa begrudgingly agreed to go home early, but he was still keen on training some more— therefore he decided that he'd be going to the gym earlier tomorrow to do so.

as he walked down the aisle, he spotted a tall girl reaching up to get a drink beside the red wine that he was after. he blinked. she didn't seem to have any trouble doing so because of her tall height, but out of his gentleman instinct, he went near the girl and grabbed the bottle of sake she was reaching for.

their hands touched and oikawa almost pulled away abruptly at the sparks that flew from the mere contact of their skin. the girl slipped her hands out of his hurriedly.

he turned to face the girl and their eyes met. familiar golden yellow orbs stared back into his own hazelnut brown ones.

recognition flashed in both of their eyes as they abruptly pulled away from each other, with oikawa now holding on to the bottle of sake nervously. his heart started to stutter, and he didn't know why.

"it's you." he found his voice after a long awkward silence.

the girl blinked, turning away from him and instead looking down at the sake he was holding. she pointed at it and her cold voice came like winter in september, "i was going to get that."

her voice sent unnecessary chills down his spine. he looked at his hand that was holding the sake and then back at the girl.

"and now i have it." was oikawa's witty reply.

it was the last sake in the shelf so there was no way for the girl to get another one and just leave him alone. oikawa used this to his advantage. he remembered the plan his teammates had come up with, and pondered whether or not to go along with it now that he has the girl's attention.

he totally had her undivided attention.

the girl looked up and rose an eyebrow at him. "just give it to me. i'll even pay you twice its price."

or maybe not.

"i happen to need the sake so i'm not giving it to you." he childishly argued with a lie, completely forgetting to execute iwaizumi and his team's plan.

she frowned, looking away as if she was thinking. she then sighed, rubbing her forehead in impatience. "if this is still about me messing with you, i get it, i'll stop permanently. just give me the sake."

he disregarded her remark with a pout, "say please."

she blinked at him in disbelief before scoffing, "please."

"what? i didn't hear that, sorry. can you repeat it please?" oikawa mocked.

"i said please, nitwit." she grumbled.

"i'm sorry my hearing is really bad nowadays from all my fans screaming during matches. please repeat it, if you don't mind."

she blinked at him in disbelief before she sneered. "what the hell are you playing at?"

"woah." he defensively raised his hands. "what do you mean, 'what am i playing at'? you texted me out of nowhere and then continuously courted me. what are you playing at?"

the conversation took a sharp turn from the sake to the complete confrontation of their late-night conversations.

oh god, talk about topic-hopper, oikawa.

"unbelievable." she rolled her eyes, scoffing. "you rejected me in public, ruined my reputation, and you're now taking my sake."

he looked offended, "you literally serenaded me in my school with your damn school's cheer squad! why the hell would i not reject that!"

"you never had a problem with the milkbread! how was i supposed to know you'd have an issue with the cheer team?!" she argued back.

bystanders inside the grocery supermarket were looking at them, making them a little bit more conscious of their surroundings.

"that's because milkbread isn't shiratorizawa." he said in a lower tone, making her look at him.

pain engulfed his entire being as he said the next words. "milkbread won't beat me in the only thing i'm good at and say i should have went to their school instead of prioritizing my worthless pride."

the girl in front of him blinked. she was silent as he had his head down in shame. he shouldn't have said those words.

oikawa didn't know what sort of things were running through the girl's head but he was certain that they were degrading thoughts of him. he'd just opened up one of his insecurities to her again. it was just like that one night where he conversed with her about his pain of losing to the top school. he felt like a clown for admitting his weaknesses to the sister of his arch nemesis.

"i—" she cut herself off abruptly when oikawa looked up at her.

she cleared her throat and averted her guilt-filled eyes. she heard from semi that the setter might have been offended by her stunt but she never took it to heart because she though the guy had a playboy heart of stone that didn't even think about technical stuff like that. she underestimated him.

"i took it too far with the cheer team." she admitted, still not looking him in the eyes. "i won't bother you again."

suddenly, the girl bowed at him at a perfect 90° angle, startling his entire being at the respect from his nemesis' sister.

"gomenasai."

he blinked, cheeks flushing read and his heart beating uncontrollably in his chat as he took in the sight of a beautiful girl bowing down at him in apology.

before oikawa could react to her words, the girl turned on her heel and ran away from him, leaving oikawa stunned.

he felt the cold glass bottle of the sake resting in his palms as he took a quick glance at it.

"she left the sake."
