Chandra sat across from Aunt Nyla at the kitchen table, the familiar hum of the ceiling fan swirling the scent of dinner through the room. But despite the cozy atmosphere, there was a heaviness in the air between them, a tension that hadn't been there before.
Nyla was watching her closely, her dark eyes sharp and focused, and Chandra had the uncomfortable feeling that her aunt already knew something she shouldn't.
"So, Chandra," Nyla said, her voice calm and steady. "Tell me what's been going on lately."
Chandra's fingers fidgeted with the hem of her shirt. She wasn't sure how much to say—or if she should say anything at all. Nyla was family, sure, but there was something different about her this time. The way she'd said she felt like she needed to be here—it sent a shiver down Chandra's spine.
Chandra glanced toward the kitchen, where her mom was still cooking, and lowered her voice. "What do you mean?"
Nyla raised an eyebrow, her gaze not wavering. "I mean, I felt something change, Chandra. I've spent years studying things most people don't understand, and I know when something powerful has awakened. I came because I felt that something happened here."
Chandra swallowed hard. She knew Nyla was direct, but this was more than she expected. The weight of the resonator's power was still fresh in her mind, and the idea that Nyla could sense it—that she might even know something about it—made Chandra uneasy.
"You think something's happening here?" Chandra asked, feigning confusion, though her heart was pounding in her chest.
Nyla's smile was small but knowing. "I do. And I think you know what I'm talking about."
For a moment, Chandra debated whether she should tell her aunt the truth. She could feel the secrets bubbling up inside her, fighting to be released, but she held them back. She needed to be careful.
"I'm not sure what you mean," Chandra said, trying to sound casual.
Nyla tilted her head slightly, her eyes narrowing. "You don't have to lie to me, Chandra. I know about the Echoes. I know about the resonator."
Chandra's breath caught in her throat. The words hung in the air between them, sharp and heavy. Nyla knew.
"How... how do you know about it?" Chandra asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nyla leaned forward, her expression softening slightly. "I've been researching these kinds of artifacts for years. The resonator isn't just an ancient object—it's a tool, a conduit for something far more powerful. And it's not something to be taken lightly."
Chandra's heart raced as the pieces started to fall into place. Nyla had always been distant, always off on some research trip or archaeological dig. Now, it made sense. She wasn't just traveling—she was searching for things like the resonator.
"You've seen one of these before?" Chandra asked.
