Over the next few days, Chandra did her best to avoid Malek, though it wasn't easy. He seemed to pop up everywhere—at lunch, in the hallways, even in the library where she went to study. It was like he was always watching, waiting for the right moment to approach her again.
But Chandra kept her distance, following Nyla's advice. The last thing she needed was to get tangled up in another mystery, especially with Torin still looming in the background.
But Malek wasn't easily deterred.
One afternoon, as Chandra was leaving school, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned to see Malek jogging to catch up, his expression casual but determined.
"Hey, Chandra," he called, his voice warm and friendly. "You heading home?"
Chandra nodded, her heart pounding. "Yeah."
"Mind if I walk with you?" Malek asked, falling into step beside her.
Chandra hesitated, but nodded. She didn't want to seem paranoid, even though every instinct in her body told her to be careful.
For a few moments, they walked in silence, the sound of their footsteps echoing in the quiet street. Chandra kept her eyes straight ahead, her mind racing with questions. Why was he so interested in her? What did he really want?
Finally, Malek broke the silence. "I heard you're pretty involved in school. Clubs, dancing, all that stuff."
Chandra glanced at him, her suspicion flaring again. "Yeah. I guess."
Malek smiled, his dark eyes gleaming. "That's cool. I've always liked people who are passionate about what they do."
Chandra forced a smile, though her unease was growing. "Thanks."
They continued walking, the tension between them thickening. Chandra could feel the weight of his gaze on her, like he was studying her, trying to figure out what made her tick.
"So, what do you do in your free time?" Malek asked casually.
Chandra shrugged, keeping her answers short. "Just hang out with friends. Nothing special."
Malek nodded, but there was something in his expression—something almost predatory—that made Chandra's skin crawl. She needed to get away from him, but she didn't want to raise suspicion.
As they approached her street, Chandra slowed down. "This is my stop."
Malek smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Well, it was nice talking to you. Maybe we'll run into each other again."
Chandra nodded, her stomach twisting with unease. "Yeah. Maybe."
As she walked up the steps to her house, she could feel Malek's eyes on her back, watching her until she disappeared inside.
Once the door closed behind her, Chandra leaned against it, her heart racing. Something was definitely off about him. And she needed to find out what.
