The next few days passed in a blur of uncertainty. Chandra and RJ kept their distance from the resonator, unwilling to risk using it again without Nyla's guidance. But the weight of its power still hung over them, a constant reminder of the responsibility they carried—and the dangers that came with it.
Chandra found herself thinking more and more about Torin. His smooth words, his confident demeanor—they haunted her thoughts, making her question everything she had believed about the Echoes. Nyla had warned her not to trust him, but Chandra couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the story.
It was during this uneasy time that Chandra first met Malek.
She was at school, sitting in the cafeteria with Brenna and a few of their other friends, trying to focus on the mundane chatter around her. But her mind kept drifting back to the resonator, to Nyla's warnings, to the looming threat of Torin.
"I heard we've got a new student," Brenna said, nudging Chandra with her elbow. "And he's cute."
Chandra blinked, pulling herself out of her thoughts. "Who?"
Brenna grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "His name's Malek. Transferred here from out of state. I saw him in history class this morning, and let me tell you—he's fine."
Chandra rolled her eyes, but she couldn't help the small smile that tugged at her lips. "You say that about every new guy."
Brenna shrugged, unabashed. "What can I say? I appreciate the finer things in life."
As if on cue, the doors to the cafeteria swung open, and a tall figure walked in. Chandra's eyes were immediately drawn to him—he had a presence that was hard to ignore. He was tall, with a lean, athletic build, and his skin was a warm, deep brown that seemed to catch the light. His dark hair was cropped short, and his eyes—sharp and focused—scanned the room as if he were taking everything in at once.
"That's him," Brenna whispered, her voice dripping with excitement. "Malek."
Chandra watched as he walked toward the food line, his movements smooth and confident. There was something about him—something that reminded her of the power she had felt when she touched the resonator. It wasn't the same, but it was close enough to make her heart race.
"He's cute," Chandra admitted, though her mind was already spinning with questions. Who was he? Where had he come from? And why did she feel like there was more to him than met the eye?
Brenna nudged her again, her grin widening. "Told you. You should totally go talk to him."
Chandra shook her head, though the idea wasn't entirely unappealing. "Maybe later."
As Malek moved through the cafeteria, Chandra couldn't shake the feeling that he was somehow connected to everything that was happening. The resonator, the Echoes, Torin—it all felt like pieces of a puzzle she was still trying to put together.
And Malek was the newest piece.
