“The best secrets are the most twisted”

Darth Vader
The children take after their mother. At least, when it comes to packing. Padmé always had a knack for taking awhile to pack, sorting through her clothes and choosing them tediously along with accessories and shoes. The twins seemed to have inherited the habit as the minutes tick by. I suppose the brief interlude allows me to slip back into my thoughts although I'm not entirely sure that I want to wander there. How and more importantly when should I tell Padmé about my true identity? I highly doubt she'd believe me anyways since I'm sure Kenobi thoroughly convinced her that her husband was deceased. Obi-Wan wasn't known as the great negotiator for known reason, he was a smooth talker and had an uncanny way of empathizing with others. I frown slightly as I hear more noise coming from the twin's room and I see Padmé slip out of the room and move further down the hallway, most likely packing her own things. It's almost impossible not to notice that she seems different, still breathtakingly beautiful but not as radiant, there was something sad behind her eyes that pained me. Was it my supposedly abrupt death on Mustafar that she was grieving over or something else entirely? Maybe she wasn't even grieving over me, perhaps it was something else. After all, who would grieve for a murderous, traitorous husband? Even an angel like Padmé had her limits. And once again my mind falls back to how I must go about breaking my identity to my estranged wife and our children, the latter most likely don't need to know right away. Better that Padmé and I come up with a way to tell them together, that is, if she even believes me. She won't believe me if I simply tell her but why tell someone when you can show them?
I still have a few tricks up my sleeve, one in particular that I've been saving for a long time, waiting till it would come in handy. After all, my master is the famed Palpatine, the man who played every citizen in the galaxy, pretending to be their most loyal and dedicated Chancellor when he was really a malicious Sith lord waiting to take over so it's kind of hard not to have a few secrets of my own. Most of them aren't really that important but I do have one that could change everything. I've waited a year and a half to share this secret, it's never been the right time but now, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I need to spend time with my family and I can't do that if I'm gallivanting around the galaxy running errands for the emperor.
It's time for this secret to be shared.

Padmé
After growing satisfied that the twins were able to pack their toys without squabbling, I slipped out of their cheerfully decorated room to gather my own things. I entered my own quarters, closing the door quietly so as not to be disrupted. After all, I deserved a little time alone after these sudden changes. Why was Darth Vader milling around my living room and more importantly, why was I not dead? There were always stories circulating about Vader's cruel and insensitive actions towards the members of the Rebel Alliance. Never once had I heard a story of Vader being merciful. Did he think that by treating me with kindness I would divulge all the Alliance's secrets to him? Certainly not. He would have to kill me before I uttered anything but if it meant safeguarding my children, well, that's a completely different story. I stifle a sigh as I pluck dresses from the closet that catch my eye, folding them and sliding them inside a luggage back along with shoes and accessories. Normally when I travel to Naboo I pack lightly because I already have clothes and other things at Varykino but not this time since we weren't going to be stopping there. Vader hadn't mentioned how long we would be in Naboo for so I packed heavily, choosing outfits for many different occasions, just to be on the safe side. I studied myself in the mirror, pursing my lips slightly at the frazzled appearance staring back at me. Moments later, I'd changed into a light gold dress with black flecks and twisted my hair into a loose side braid. I grabbed my bags and stepped out of my room, closing the door softly as I went back to the twin's room to help them with their things. I frowned slightly as the room was void of their bags and themselves. I tensed slightly, immediately apprehensive as I scanned the room, checking the closet to make sure they weren't trying to play an impromptu game of hide and seek. I stormed out of their room, heaving my back with my as I followed the growing sound of voices. I found the twin's outside, running around, their bags thrown in a heap. Vader is watching them, his arms crossed over his chest as they squeal with laughter. The Sith lord seems to sense my presence because he turns around as I exit the doorway, beckoning for the twins to cease their game before they end up getting hurt. "I meant to tell you that I was going to help them bring their things outside and let them run around to burn some energy. You were in your room packing and I didn't want to disturb you" Vader admits as he turns to look back at the twins who are now scampering over. "Mother, Luke and I managed to fit almost all of our toys in just one bag, even Obi the Wampa" Leia crows excitedly as she tries to pick up her bag. Perhaps Vader has had a bad run in with a Wampa because the mention of Obi the Wampa sets him on edge noticeably as he stiffens. There's nothing scary about said stuffed animal, a gift from Obi-Wan that had been given when he'd visited for the twin's first birthday. Vader seems to shake himself out of his stupor as he strides over to help Leia with her bag. He heaves it over his shoulder stiffly and I help Luke carry his bag as Vader leads us to a small ship that wasn't there when he first arrived. The ramp slowly unfolds and the twins glance at each other delightedly as they burst inside but I follow more reluctantly, more suspicious of this man's motives. "If I intended to kill you and your family, I wouldn't be carrying your daughter's bag" Vader sighed wearily as he headed inside. I had no choice but to head inside as the twin's voices began to grow more shrill, it seems a fight had broken out.
"I told you that I wanted to sit up front, there's only one copilot seat and I want it, plus I'm older then you" Luke argued, pacing back and forth in the passenger cabin as Leia scowled
"That's not fair! I want to sit up front." She retorted hotly, returning his glare evenly.
I frowned slightly as I stowed away the luggage bags in an overhead compartment, it was going to be a long trip if they were quarreling like this the whole time. "Neither of you are going to be sitting in the pilot cabin because neither of you are pilots. There are perfectly good seats back here" I chided lightly, stifling a smile as they both turned their irritated gazes towards me before reluctantly settling down in the passenger cabin seats. "Actually, you two can go sit up front, here, I'll even let you watch me take off" Vader suggested as he gestured for the twins to follow him into the pilot's cabin. I watched them disappear into the cabin, their soft voices floating out of the cabin. There didn't seem to be any other guards on the transport, just us four. Surely he wasn't going to travel to Naboo without soldiers. Moments later, the whirring of the transport's engine grew louder as it slowly lifted into the air, exiting Alderaan's atmosphere and engaging in the cold darkness of hyperspace. Vader reappeared moments later but instead of taking a seat, he simply stood there, leaning against the wall of the ship. "The ship's on auto-pilot, the twins are still up front looking at the windows." He explained smoothly, the respirator hissing with each breath. "And your men? Where are they?" I asked suspiciously, so far I'd been pleasantly surprised by his behavior but a nexu can't change it's stripes, he was probably only acting like this because he wanted something.
"I dismissed a few of them, sent them back to the emperor with detailed reports of my previous missions. Another armed transport with several of my men is flanking us. I thought it would be more comfortable for the children if it was simply just us on this ship" He mused. I raised an eyebrow slightly, all the more perplexed. Since when did Darth Vader, Sith Lord and second in command to the Emperor care about making children comfortable?
"Padmé there's something I need to talk to you about, well something I need to tell you" Vader continued, shifting his position ever so slightly.
"Well you might as well tell me before the children get bored and come back" I pointed out, suddenly feeling uneasy. Why was he so fidgety? Vader seemed unnerved and that in itself made me a bit nervous. His breathing had slowed ever so slightly and his posture had straightened. I carefully schooled my features into an inscrutable expression as he moved his hand towards his mask.
"If I told you, I highly doubt you would believe me so I've decided to simply show you" He sighs as he continues to slide his mask off. The mask comes off with a small hiss and Vader's true facial features are revealed.
In the following seconds, I feel a sickening pang of nausea mixed with heartbreaking pain. Suddenly everything is shutting down as disbelief fills the air around me and all I want to do is embrace the comfort of unconsciousness and then wake up to find that this was all a dream. But it's not and now I need to come to terms with the stark reality that's standing in front of me, that's started to pace with anxiety.
"No, this is a trick."
