Juyeon was a loser.
He was one of the 25 other losers staying on campus during winter break. Even he thought he was a loser.
"God, I'm such a loser," he groaned as he lay in bed. His roomate, Heo Hyunjoon, zipped up his luggage, standing up and sighing contentedly.
"You're not a loser," Hyunjoon argued, pulling on a jacket. "I don't room with losers."
"Yeah, well, there's a first for everything," Juyeon grumbled. He sat up, swinging his legs off of the bed. "Dude, is there any way you can sneak me into one of your luggages?" He winked jokingly . "I've never been to Japan."
"Sorry, man," Hyunjoon replied, hoisting his backpack on. "You'll see Japan soon." He pulled on a black mask. "Just not today."
"Well, I had to try." Juyeon chuckled dryly, getting out of bed to see Hyunjoon out. "Have fun."
His roommate fist-bumped him. "See you in two weeks." He wheeled his luggage out of the room. "I'll bring you back something good!"
"Ooh, like a Japanese boy?" Juyeon joked.
Hyunjoon laughed, shaking his head. Juyeon waved, and watched the other boy disappear down the hallway. As soon as Hyunjoon turned the corner, Juyeon sighed and went back inside, locking the door behind him.
Three and a half hours later, Juyeon was already bored out of his mind. He considered going outside, but it was already sunset, and it would start getting cold soon.
He twirled around in his chair, sighing. Hyunjoon was probably on the plane by now. Juyeon eyed his phone, wondering if he could still call and beg him to come back before the other boy powered off his phone.
No way. Juyeon shook his head, disgusted that the thought had even risen. Hyunjoon had already done enough favors for him, and Juyeon would hate if his roommate said yes and missed out on a nice trip to Japan with his family.
I'll be fine, he told himself, filled with renewed motivation to entertain himself.
It's only two weeks. Two weeks and then your best friend will be back. He took a deep breath. You can do this, Juyeon.
"I can't do this."
The boy was practically clawing his eyes out. And it was only midnight.
Groaning, Juyeon sat up, turning on the lights and powering his computer on. Before he could even log onto Valorant, a notice popped up.
"You're kidding me, right?" Juyeon muttered, reading the notice. "What do you mean, 'No WiFi'?!" He checked the signal. "Did the college just fucking cut me off...?!"
He snarled, turning off his computer. His eyes lingered on his phone on his desk, and he grabbed it, dialing Hyunjoon's number.
Juyeon sat down on his bed, holding the phone to his ear, and listened to the sound of the rings-
Suddenly, the ring morphed into a high-pitched squeal at a frequency that could've burned his eardrums out. Juyeon winced, pulling his ear away from the phone. "Ah, shit," he frowned. "They really did cut me off..."
Then, the lights went off, leaving Juyeon in a pitch-black room with nothing but his phone, still emitting the annoying sound. The boy sighed. "What is this, my mom's house? Are they trying to give me a bedtime now?"
He laid back down, discouraged and missing Hyunjoon's company even more now. It was quiet, just the sound of the wind blowly against the windows outside. Juyeon closed his eyes...
Click.
Juyeon sat up, his eyes roaming the dorm room until they landed on the bare outline of his door.
His door, once locked.
Now open.
