I felt the ground quake underneath my feet steadily making my heart drop as I felt the footsteps getting closer and closer. The moment I looked up and saw the robot looming over a building at the edge of the park I also heard a confident voice shout behind me. "Nobody get in my way, this robot is mine!"
Turning, I scanned around until I saw the source of the voice standing cockily on a small dilapidated building. His bright orange hair made me realize that I had just seen him earlier fighting with some other kid. He seemed a bit battered but not enough to be completely out of commission.
You've got to be kidding me, I thought. This guy either has a death wish or is an absolute idiot. I tisked, shrugging it off. In this line of work you attract those kinds of people.
I ran in the opposite direction of the robot, realizing it was heading my and that cocky bastard's way at an alarming pace for something so massive. My tail grappled onto the battered building and flung myself into the air. I landed on the same building as the orange haired boy, and I could see him jump in surprise as I landed seemingly right next to him.
"Get out of the way or you're going to get crushed before you can have your little ego trip," I said to him indifferently as I walked past him. His surprise devolved into anger as I said that and gripped my shoulder with a bruising grip, preventing me from moving any further.
"What the fuck did you say to me? That's no way to talk to a future pro hero," he growled, tightening his grip. Looking back I saw that the robot was halfway through the park, too close for comfort I'd say. I don't have time for this.
With one swift motion I twisted his arm behind his back. "Look if you want to be in a hospital bed go for it but don't drag me into your shit," with that said I let him go, walking calmly away.
When I was a few feet away I felt something coming towards me from behind aimed at my neck. Hardening the ribbon choker just in time I felt something embed itself into the choker. Just one more millisecond of hesitation on my part and that thing would have probably pierced through my skin. I pulled out whatever that material was with my tail and looked at it thoroughly. It was an incredibly sharp metal shard.
"Maybe I'll use your unconscious body as a distraction while I heroically defeat the robot, then you'd learn something!" He smirked, pulling the shard from my grasp with a motion from his hand.
Suddenly he started to cough heavily, spurts of blood started to come out. Apparently he was more injured than he let on. I can't believe that they let someone like him take the exam, even heavily injured he still is causing trouble.
The robot loomed like an immovable mountain as it steadily came closer and closer, making it harder and harder to stand steadily on the ground as it's foot rumbled the earth. It was far too close, just a few more steps and it would be right at the font of our building. Forget this, I'm not letting him get me crushed.
So while he was heaving and trying to steady himself I started looking for an easy escape. Then something crossed my mind that I never thought would. But you have to save him. He's going to be a goner if you don't do anything. That's what a hero does right? Save those who don't deserve it. This made me hesitate and look back, eyes widening when seeing the robot reach its arm up ready to throw it down onto the building we were on.
My body acted out on its own at that point, reaching the guy that's only been a nuisance to me at lighting speed. I picked him up with surprising ease, adrenaline does wonders, and grappled onto a nearby building with my tail just in time for the robot's fist to come colliding into our building.
Pulling us up onto the building's roof, I let go of the orange haired narcissist with a thud onto the cement floor. I heard him let out a large heave at that, making me smirk.
The robot tilted its head to look straight at me, it's red visor glaring at me with mirth as it pulled its arm off of the crushed building. I couldn't keep playing hopscotch with this robot and a large body dragging me down. This robot was much faster than I thought it would be.
At that moment I felt like a cornered animal, not quite sure what to do. But I shoved that feeling down, I didn't have time to grovel in it. I glanced around, knowing this robot wouldn't let us escape that easily because it had locked itself onto us.
I balled my hand into a fist, my only option was to brute force my way out of this. Then out of nowhere I saw a boy with yellow hair with a purple streak shouted from a much taller building not far from where I was standing. "C'mon, if you want to defeat that hulking thing, then I guess you'll need some help, huh?"
