"What did you need, Kaminari?" I asked, raising my eyebrows at the aforementioned boy. We were currently sitting on the floor of his dorm room, and Kaminari was scribbling away in his composition notebook. He smiled, briefly glancing up from his notebook to make eye contact.
"I wanna play a game with you," he said, going right back to scribbling in his notebook. I pursed my lips, tapping at my crisscrossed legs anxiously.
"Ok..." I waited for him to continue, which he didn't, so I remained silent. Eventually, he finished scribbling and roughly closed the notebook, throwing it down harshly on the floor between the two of us. I flinched slightly at his intensity and looked to him. His eyes glowed with excitement, yet an evil smirk was plastered on his lips.
"We're going to play a 30-day challenge. Well, more like you're going to play it and I'm going to direct you through it," Kaminari explained, bouncing up and down a little.
"Alright... What do I do?"
"So glad you asked! Basically, I'm going to give you a dare, and you'll have 30 days to complete it. If you don't complete it, you'll suffer a consequence which I'll get into in a minute; BUT, I'm going to help you out by giving you one dare every morning to make sure you complete it in time. You will also have a deadline for those dares as well. You must complete each dare I give you by midnight that night or you will suffer the same consequence," Kaminari explained in about two breaths. He panted slightly, eyes bright as he leaned closer to me. "So you wanna play?"
"Um... I guess? Still not entirely sure what this is going to accomplish or anything but alright. What's my first dare?" I asked, making Kaminari's smile widen. Honestly, this game was piquing my interest a little bit. It also scared me, though, considering Kaminari was the one giving the dares.
"First of all, now that you're officially participating, there's no going back. Or else you will suffer the consequence."
"What's the consequence?" Kaminari paused, his lips turning to a frown at the interruption. He put up his finger, pointing it at me briefly.
"I'm getting to that, ok? Be patient," Kaminari said, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms across his chest. "So anyway, do you understand? This is your last chance to turn back."
"I'm in. Let's do this," I stated confidently. A corner of his lips raised as his eyebrows shadowed his eyes, giving me a bad feeling instantly.
"Your ultimate dare for the month is... to get (Y/n) to ask you out AND kiss you." My mouth dropped. I wanted to say so many words at the same time, but they came out as incoherent sounds. Kaminari let out a sadistic laugh at my current state of shock.
"That's.. That's not funny! Man, I don't... I don't think I can do this anymore... You know I like (Y/n); you can't do this to me, asshole. Can I back out??" I forced out, still trying to comprehend what I had just signed up for.
"Nope! Not unless you want to suffer the consequence!"
"WHAT CONSEQUENCE?!?" I yelled, my eyes wide as my whole body leaned forward so my head was resting on the floor. Kaminari was having the time of his life, laughing hysterically.
"If you fail to complete your dare, I will personally reveal to the entire school about your little crush on (Y/n); including (Y/n) themselves." I groaned loudly, pulling my hands through my hair.
"This isn't fair, man. (Y/n) doesn't even know I exist, so how the fuck do I get them to ask me out and kiss me??" I said.
"That's what I'm going to help you with! I'm gonna give you a dare every morning for the next 30 days, starting tomorrow, and help you build up a relationship with them! I'll start off easy dude, so don't worry," Kaminari explained.
"Ok. So don't you fucking dare say shit like 'kiss them' on one of the first days. That'll ruin the whole thing," I warned.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. I want this relationship to happen just as much as you do, but I'm not waiting another 7 years to see it happen. You've liked them for years, Shinsou. This is more than just a 'childhood crush.' You're a twenty-year-old in your junior year of college, so if it was nothing bigger than that, then it would've gone away by now." I sighed, knowing very well that Kaminari was right.
I did like them a lot, but I was so scared of rejection and never knew how to really talk to people. Plus, the fact that I hadn't talked to them since the time I held the door for them in the seventh grade was not helping my lack of confidence. Closing my eyes for a minute, I went through the options I had.
If I backed out now, then I wouldn't have to go through possibly the most idiotic things ever. But then again, I'd have to go through the embarrassment of (Y/n) finding out about my crush on them through a rumor. On top of that, I'd probably be made fun of for the rest of my college career. Which was still another year.
"Fine. We'll see how this goes. Don't forget the fact that I can ruin your entire career just as easily as you can ruin mine," I threatened, keeping my gaze on the floor.
"Sure you can. But I know you can do it! Just don't overthink it, alright? Talking to crushes isn't as hard as your brain overthinks it to be." I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
"Says you; you have a crush on every attractive person you lay your eyes on. Plus, you know how to flirt and are actually a decent-looking guy. On top of that, you're super confident. And I'm just... Well.. Trash..." I said slowly bringing myself back up into a sitting position, rubbing at my dark, baggy eyelids.
"Hey now! Don't say that about yourself, Shinsou! Sure, you might not have the best outward appearance and you're not confident in yourself; but, that's gotta be attractive to someone, right?" I blinked, my eyebrows raising.
"Thanks?"
"No problem, homie." I stared at him for a minute before shaking my head.
"Referring to what you just said... What if (Y/n)'s not into a tired, mentally unstable, self-conscious, ugly ass guy who doesn't know how to start a conversation?" I asked. Kaminari opened his mouth, before closing it, his mouth twisting to the side slightly.
"I'm sure they are. You just gotta figure that out within the 30 days," he eventually stated. I frowned, returning my gaze to the floor.
"I feel like this isn't normal," I voiced honestly.
"It is! Don't worry about it; it's completely normal to feel this way. You just gotta learn to overcome your fears and get as close to (Y/n) as you possibly can. Which, I'll be helping with!" Kaminari said enthusiastically, pointing his thumb towards his chest as he finished his sentence. I smiled.
"Thanks, Kaminari. You're a good friend."
"Don't mention it! A bro's gotta be there for his homies, right?" Kaminari laughed. "Anyway, meet me here before class tomorrow and I'll give you your first dare, alright?"
"Sounds good to me," I said with a smile, standing up from the floor. "See you in the morning."
"See ya!"
And with that, I left Kaminari's dorm and headed towards my own. These next 30 days were bound to be a strange adventure.
