Ally say awkwardly next to Max as he snorted a white substance off the brown hardwood table. She held a glass of water in her hand and scanned the room, seeing nobody she recognized. "Maybe you should slow down." Ally yelled over the loud music. Max laughed and shook his head, reaching for another shot that sat in the middle of the table. He downed the shot, no chaser needed and continued talking to the woman next to him.

Ally shook her head in disbelief. She understood why Max was going just a little crazy, but she felt that it would be better to discuss it rather than drinking the problem away. Ally sighed. She didn't want to go down the path that she had been going down a couple years prior, and the path that her own brother had went down back in 2019. Ally grabbed her phone from the small purse she carried. She dialed Audrey Hopes number and slid out of the booth she shared with Max and a couple other people. "Where are you going?" Max slurred. "I'm just getting more drinks" Ally smirked. Max grinned and continued taking shots.

"Why the hell are you calling me?" Audrey said after picking up the phone. "Don't worry I'm not calling to start anything. I need your help with something" Ally replied. Audrey laughed "Why the fuck would I help you?" Ally decided to change her tone, from soft to stern "Listen Max needs your help. He's not doing okay. Some shit went down with his family and you and Ali know him better than me. Honestly he's probably listen to you more than me. So if I tell you where we are will you help him?" Ally could here Audrey's sigh on the other end and her talking to someone in the background, presumably Aki. "Where are you?" Audrey asked. Ally texted the address to Audrey and hung up the phone. She grabbed a few more shots from a passing waiter to not raise suspicion and walked back to the booth.

She set the shots down on the table "Heyyy you got them." Max laughed. "Maybe we should talk about what happened back at the play. You know what happened with your dads." Ally had kindness laced in her voice. She genuinely felt bad for Max. His plan to help his family just destroyed it. "I don't want to talk about that. I want to drink and do a lot of drugs. I'd prefer to forget about it." Max replied. " What your doing isn't going to make you feel better. It just shoves it down and takes the pain away for a short time. I tried doing the same thing after everything went down with my brother, but it didn't do anything. It took the pain away for a short time; Soon I still felt the pain when I was high. After a couple of weeks being high didn't even help me feel better. And then I went through withdrawals which made it worse and then I felt guilty. I thought what would my family feel if they saw me like this. How would my brother feel? Think about that Max."

Max met eyes with Ally. Even though his mind was clouded by the drugs and the alcohol he absorbed Ally's words. She had explained something personal to him, to make him understand. Max understood. "What if my dads never talk to me again because of what I did?" Ally thought for a moment "Then they're stupid. You were just trying to help. Of course your dad got upset. His husband cheated on him. It's not your fault it's your dads fault for cheating." Ally replied. Max nodded. He set his full shot glass down on the table and thought for a moment. Ally turned around saw Audrey and Aki enter the room. "We're good" Ally mouthed. Audrey nodded and turned to Aki signaling towards the bar.

"I can't go home." Max sighed, leaning back into the cushioned seat. "Stay with me for a couple days. I live close to school too so you don't have to worry about that." Ally smiled. Ally slid out of the seat and reached for Max's hand. Max stumbled out of the bench and grabbed Ally's hand, following her out of the club and into the busy streets of New York.

*********

"I'm really sorry for trying to drag you into my problems." Max spoke. His words flowing into the chill New York air. Ally opened her mouth to speak but no words exited her mouth. Max seemed to understand that Ally silently accepted his apology.
