SSA David Rossi sighed as he put the phone back into it's receiver. He had just gotten off the phone with a caseworker who told him that his long-lost daughter, Serafina, had been moved to another adoption center in Washington State.
Maybe I should explain from the beginning. Serafina Alessia-Chiara Renaldi-Rossi is 6 years old and the product of a one-night stand between David Rossi and an exotic dancer named Clarisse Renaldi. Their relationship ended that night, but Clarisse showed up three months later at the office in Quantico and told Rossi she was pregnant.
Rossi, of course, being skeptical that it was his, asked for proof. Clarisse presented Rossi with a pregnancy test and an ultrasound. A volunteer paternity test proved that Rossi was the father. Well, Rossi wanted to keep the baby after it was born when Clarisse said that she didn't have the resources to take care of a child, but for some reason, Clarisse refused. Rossi got a leave of absence from work 6 months later when Clarisse went into labor. He watched his child, a baby girl, being born and a wave of love unlike anything he had ever felt washed over him and he vowed to protect his daughter and keep her safe no matter what.
The next day, Rossi had been called in for a case and Clarisse abandoned the baby at the hospital and Rossi never saw Serafina again.
He's spent six years searching tirelessly for his little girl and would not rest until he safely brought her home. But Serafina had grown up in foster care and adoption centers her whole life, she had no idea that her parents were alive. She had been told they were dead, but she still hoped on finding at least one of them for six years.
Rossi decided that he was going to talk to the adoption center in Washington and explain everything and provide paperwork. He couldn't take not having his daughter anymore.
Rossi got up and went next door to Hotch's office, he knocked on the door and heard a faint "come in".
Rossi opened the door and saw Hotch hunched over his desk, working on paperwork as usual.
"I need help with something." Rossi said, leaning against the door frame.
"Come in, sit down, and explain it to me." Hotch said calmly, even though on the inside, he was worried. Dave wasn't usually the one to ask for help and taking in his appearance, he looked distressed, worried, upset even.
Hotch knew this must've been big, but nothing could prepare him for what Rossi said next.
"Hotch, I have a daughter." Rossi said after he sat down.
"Go on." Hotch said gently.
"Do you remember six years ago when a woman by the name of Clarisse Renaldi came to our office and told me she was pregnant?" Rossi asked.
Hotch thought back for a minute, he actually did remember that. At the time, he thought the stripper/prostitute from Washington DC was out of her mind, not believing that Rossi could be so careless about protection and pregnancy.
"Yes, I do. Everyone at the time thought she was crazy, myself included. But what does she have to do with this?" Hotch asked, leaning back in his chair a little bit to give his aching lower back some relief from sitting in an office chair most of the day.
Dave smiled softly, "I didn't believe her at first either, but when she showed me the positive pregnancy test and an ultrasound of the baby, I knew she wasn't lying. I doubted it was mine given her reputation, but after I took a volunteer paternity test to be sure, it proved the baby was mine."
"What happened after that with Clarisse and the child?"
"Clarisse told me that she didn't have the resources to care for the child, so I offered to take the baby and raise it after it was born, but she refused. Six months later, Clarisse went into labor and I took a leave of absence from work to help her with the baby, which turned out to be a girl we named Serafina. The next day, we got called away on a case, Clarisse abandoned Serafina at the hospital and even though my name was on the birth certificate, the hospital didn't call me. I haven't seen, spoke to, or heard from either Clarisse or Serafina for six years. I've spent the last six years tracking every adoption center and foster home Serafina's been sent to and every time I get close to getting her back, she gets moved again. I even set up a room for her back at the mansion before she was born and every year, I switch out the clothes and toys I think she'll play with and wear for age appropriate toys and fitting clothes, I even buy her a Christmas and birthday present every year for when she comes home. All I want is my little girl back, Hotch, and I need yours and the team's help in finding her." Dave said sadly, getting tears in his eyes. Hotch got up, walked around the desk, and bent down on one knee in front of the older agent, putting his hands on Rossi's knees for balance.
