7.00pm, back at Janet's house
I opened the door to Janet's and dropped my bags with a weighty thump.
I hobbled to the sofa and virtually collapse onto it. I was exhausted.
I didn't even notice that Janet was stood in the kitchen this whole time, watching me with a delighted smirk.
"You didn't have sex with him on your first day, did you?" She remarked cheekily.
I jumped, and rapidly turned to face her.
I paused.
"No," I chuckled, "but I am exhausted," I said.
"He has this weird effect on me Janet and he knows it. I want to speak but all the words come out in - this jumbled mess," I added.
"I didn't even spend a whole day in the office. We left to get coffee at around 2. He ended up taking me to this coffee shop where the coffees were $10 each!"
Janet's mouth opened and her eyes widened.
"What's worse," I continued, "is that on Friday he's taking me out for 'new employee drinks'" I sighed in despair.
Janet's expression shifted to an excited smile.
"Cindy!" She exclaimed with delight. "That's so exciting!"
I sighed.
"I'm not ready for this, Janet' I said wearily.
She looked at me with a gentle expression.
"You'll be fine!" She assured me, heartily. "But of course, we'll have to find you the perfect outfit to wear. Something..." Janet paused.
"Something...New!" Janet exclaimed triumphantly.
I looked at her and smiled.
"I'd be lost without you, Jan," I said graciously.
She smiled knowingly.
"Tomorrow," she continued, "we'll use your day off to go shopping," she said excitedly.
I sighed in relief. I had forgotten about that. Shopping or not, it served as the perfect time to figure out why Patrick had this effect on me.
Once more, how I could stop him from having this power over me.
I agreed happily. Janet put on two oven gloves and turned to her oven. She opened the oven door and pulled out a large white oven dish with a piping hot lasagne inside.
"It's dinner time!" She announced triumphantly.
It was delicious.
As I sat down to eat with Janet, I thought about what Patrick was doing.
Was he still in the office? Was he at home?
Patrick had offered to have someone drive me home, but I declined and said that I would walk.
Before leaving the coffee shop, i noticed Patrick had pulled out a large black telephone. He excused himself from the table and was gone for about 20 minutes before returning, and sitting down. I hasn't thought much of it at the time, but I wondered who he was speaking to.
I quickly stopped, and smiled at Janet.
We spent the evening talking about her day, clothes, fashion. Mean while, just outside, the sprawling concrete of the city was slowly opening its eyes, one by one, speckling the skyline with dots of light.
