(Human Rk900, meaning his name is, unfortunately Conan)
Drumming the pads of her fingers against the cool glass of her desk, she felt boredom engulf her in an unwelcome hug. She sunk into her chair, hearing the low chatter around her. She was quiet. Not because she didn't have anyone to talk to at that moment, it was because she never did. That is, unless Officer Miller decided to have some small talk in the break room over a cup of mediocre coffee. But, she just brushed those conversations off as him being nice.
Sometimes, however, she couldn't help but think it was a little more than that. Being how she was, she thought it was kind of rude to assume it was just nothing. He had shared topics that it seemed he could never get out with other people. Like asking what her opinion of his anniversary gift to his wife would be. Or, despite her not having a child herself, how to settle a newborn when nothing seemed to be working. She had learned that Officer Miller was quite a selfless person when it came to not only family, but every single person around her.
That's just who she was, apparently, thinking most people around her were selfless. Maybe it was the profession she had stumbled under. She didn't actually ever get in the situation to be selfless or be so in tune with others to have the option to put her life on the line for anyone.
Officer Miller wasn't her partner, nobody was. And that wasn't the line of work she was hired for. She wasn't tasked with patrol shifts or even overseeing interrogations. It wasn't deviants or narcotics either, she'd obviously need to be with someone. Although that could've been helpful, she didn't have the background for such. No. It was essentially officework. Like resolving online complaints and paperwork on finished cases. Minuscule things that weren't mindless, but definitely couldn't be wasted on a detective or officer.
It didn't need a partner.
Sometimes it was just enough to see others. Watching in the background. Seeing their playful smiles as they engaged in typical workplace shenanigans. Trying to lighten moods when under a draining case. Not talking a lot with others was good in the long run because too much interaction made her anxious. So, she was often stuck with observing from afar. One person in particular was interesting. He was the most recent—to her knowledge—addition to the precinct.
Conan, at least that's what she heard, was his name. Actually, she was one hundred percent certain because he and Detective Reed were infamous for their pranks. Mostly against each other. As with everyone, he was entertaining to watch.
If you didn't know any better, you would've thought he was an android with most of his almost mechanical mannerisms. And his face was extremely symmetrical. She enjoyed keeping a few hidden tabs on him every so often, little sticky notes posted on her folder she took home everyday. It wasn't in the creepy way that stalkers do. It wasn't constant, it was to keep herself occupied during some of the slower parts of her day.
And it wasn't like she planned on following him to his house after work one day.
That would be stupid.
He wasn't the only person she observed from afar. Whenever she struggled to find motivation to work—which was embarrassingly often—she found herself taking glances around to look at Captain Fowler and her other coworkers. It made days fly by faster and sometimes allowed her to get work done.
Today was interesting because Conan was called up to Fowler's office. No surprise that he didn't come out of his office, hardly even peeking his head out to bark out his last name and retreat back to his large chair.
Conan received the same reactions from a few people, like Reed and Chen, akin to someone getting called to the principal's office. It made her smile and keep her eyes on his figure as he jokingly pushed Reed's head and made his way to Fowler's office.
