As Nines breathed out his next sentence, she could only assume his words weren't going to be satisfactory. She just had a feeling. Standing near the police car with his back to the driver's side door, he had just dragged his left hand down his face. Nines was putting away his phone—for the reason he had one in the first place and didn't just use his interface was beyond her—looking a bit defeated, "Okay. I know I said you were going to stay with us, but I'm having an officer look after you in case it gets dangerous."
"Yeah," she sucked in a breath, fiddling with the cuff link in between her thumb and index finger. She tried not to sound too sad about the news. It was better than staying in the library anyway, "As long as I get the paper turned in by tomorrow night, I'm straight peachy."
Glancing behind him at the growing impatient man in the passenger seat, he sighed, "Alright, if anything happens, call this number." With the end of those words, he handed her a slip of paper that she tucked in the waistband of her pants. It made her murmur a small thank you before taking a few steps back to the entrance of the library.
"Come on, Nines! We gotta go!" It was Detective Reed and he had his window cracked a little to be a bit louder.
"Give me a second," Nines scolded, taking a step towards her to make up for the opened space she had previously made. "Anyway, be careful and don't go wandering off without someone."
"I think I should telling you to be careful. Don't get shot, 'cause that'd be kinda sad." She laughed and ran her fingers gently through her hair.
Nines cracked a smile before turning his head to the oncoming car lights, "Alright, that's Officer Cole. We'll be close by at the crime scene of the most recent victim. Don't do anything stupid, got it?"
"Yes, sir."
"Nines!" Reed again yelled, she was just surprised he hadn't honked the horn yet.
"For fuck's sake," Nines muttered, making her laugh, then dismissed her with a polite, "Okay, see you later."
It was in the police car that there was finally a conversation between the male officer and her. She wasn't going to complain, he wasn't creepy, in fact, he was pretty young and a stellar guy. He gave her dad vibes with the way he spoke, "You doin' alright, kiddo?" His accent sounded like he was from Chicago or something. Somewhere that wasn't Detroit or anywhere in Michigan.
"Yeah... I think. How long do you think they'll be?" She looked around the car, never had she been in the passenger's side of a cop car. Or in one before today. "Er—I mean, it can't be that hard to catch a few teenagers, right?"
Seeing the dim street lamps go by as they drove around, she should've bit her tongue. Or, at least, should've realized the severity of the possible outcomes. She sure didn't care about any of those that were kidnapped, but she could only imagine what they were going through.
"I don't know. We're swinging around the station so we can get you dropped off. That's the safest place for you to be."
That made her whine. "Oh, come on, I don't want to be cooped up in a building, let me do something." She had her fingers toying with the cage separating the front seats from the back. She usually wasn't this impatient, but things had changed once she was out of the company of somewhat familiar people. Even if she had only met them hours before.
