Chapter 4
I stared up and the looming, huge metal doors before me. They looked like the entryway to a castle, complete with battlements that must have been at the least three meters thick. An icy wind blew through me and I shivered, but I couldn't deny the thread of excitement within me.
Four days for me to get here. Four days since I had taken a proper shower, but let's not dwell on that. After the long plane journey, (praising the lord that I had found my passport and the Visa from the Gala still was valid so I could actually enter the country) I had quickly invested in some serious snow gear once touching down in Alaska. Because, holy shit was it freezing! Even the sun god would get frostbite here, I'm telling you. I was half werewolf and so it was hard for me to get cold, especially in my wolf skin, but when I was human I needed some help.
At the airport I'd found out where the pack was using the Were-net (great little invention put forward at last year's Gala) and hired a car to drive to the nearest town. I'd returned the car when I got there and hiked the rest of the way. Before I went, I had found the resident Witch that could help me. I had to pay a hefty fee, but what I got was totally worth it. I got a pendant that would distort my scent whilst I was wearing it. It drew from my own power, so unless I was in the middle of the air with no life around me, I would be fine. After eating at a nice place in town and learning the gossip, I found out that the 'King Compound' (aka the King Pack) had been searching for a live-in cook, and, it subtly hinted, one of the Were family. It was so perfect. That gave me the amazing excuse to go up there.
Actually getting up there was a whole different matter. Why did they make this trail so friggin' hard to climb? The trail was big enough for a four-by-four to get through, and was surrounded by the now covered ever-green forest which the compound was nestled in, but was by far not easy to walk up. I was not one for sport, outside running in my wolf form, and when you saw me running, there was usually a good enough reason for you to be running too. I was one of the most lazy Were's you would probably ever meet. I literally only ran for my life... And even then I complained.
The snow had thankfully held off from falling whilst I was walking.Just then snowflakes started falling. Dammit, spoke too soon. Why the hell did I always do that?
Now that I had made all the effort of getting here, how did I get in?
"Hey, you there!" was the very classic call that was shouted from above. "What are you doing here?" I looked up and blinked away the snow from my eyes. I could just make out a guy on top of the battlements. Well, I assumed it was a guy from the deep voice.
"I'm Sy Summers and I'm here about the cook position!" I'd thought this all through on the long trip here. I needed an alias on the off chance that they had heard of Sya Lovelle, and it had to be close enough to my real name that I could get use to it. Sy was basically a nickname for Sya and it meant summer, and so Sy Summers was born. The issue was explaining why I was here and why I left my other Pack, but I had decided that I would answer that if they asked.
The guard shouted that I should stay there and disappeared. Five minutes later, a small door in the much larger one, that I had failed to notice, was pushed open and the guy stepped out. I couldn't really see his face very well. He came closer and discretely sniffed. "I am a Werewolf, by the way," I whispered and made him jump. He chuckled and I smiled back.
"Sorry, Ms Summers, but I had to check. I'll take you in to see the Beta now." He gestured for me to walk through the doorway and I did. "Though, just between us," the guy said when we came through, "I think you have a god chance of getting the job. Not many people are willing to work here and we've had to turn most people away because they were human. I'm Jamie, by the way," he said and stuck out his hand. I tentatively shook it and retreated as soon as I could. He didn't seem to notice and chatted on.
Now that I was inside the Compound, it didn't look like what I expected. Well, I didn't really know what I expected, but it was not this. It was lovely. There was a snow covered wide street that ran all the way through the huge compound, ending in what looked to be a large mansion at the end. Jamie told me that this street was called 'Main Lane' and that there were three blocks on each side of it. The two blocks closest to the front wall were the garages, the one on the left including snow mobiles and cars, and Enforcer houses to the right. The two other blocks on each side were normal houses that housed the Pack that didn't live in Town. Jamie told me that there were roughly forty houses, not including the Enforcer's houses.
The compound was peaceful, with a few people, and some Were's in wolf form, trotting up and down the street. Jamie often waved to them to say hi. They looked at me curiously but didn't ask about me. At the end of Main Lane there was a T junction which Jamie told me was the 'Cross Lane'. I noticed that they were very creative with their naming. The Cross Lane. Honestly.
The mansion that I had spotted from the gate was in fact the Alpha House, and was huge like many Alpha houses. To the right of it was an open-walled, but roofed, training ground and to the left was the utility shed. It was anything but a shed if you asked me, but who's asking? Jamie said that in there were simple provisions and emergency supplies in case they were snowed in or a blizzard blew through. It was like a mini-town in the middle of a forest.
"So, Sy, what brought you to Alaska? I'm guessing you left your Pack?" Jamie asked randomly and I froze for half a second, pictured of him smiling down at me, malice oozing from him and crazy eyes holding me captive. I quickly unfroze and smiled at Jamie, hoping that I didn't look as shaky as I felt.
"Oh, no reason really, I just wanted a change of scene, you know?" I said vaguely and laughed nervously. He didn't say anything but I could feel his curious gaze. Damn, I was so bad a lying. How did I plan to do this again?
We stepped into the Alpha house and Jamie asked me to take off my boots and coat. He hinted that I might want to invest in some warm, inside boots. I put that on my mental to-do list. "I'll take you to the Beta now, Ian. He's a nice guy so you don't have to worry about him. Cool accent, by the way."
"What about your Alpha," I said, before I could stop myself. I smacked my lips together and fought the impulse to slap my hand over my mouth.
Jamie laughed and for the first time, I noticed how handsome he really was with raven black hair and laughing blue eyes. He was quite tall and seemed to have some serious muscle on him, now that he's taken his bug coat off. I felt a twist in my stomach as I suddenly thought how easy it would be for him to hurt me. I pushed the thought away, but it's hard to un-think something. He seemed like a nice guy! You also though he was a nice guy, my wolf side growled, angry about this inner weakness.
"Hey, are you okay?" Jamie asked and reached for my shoulder. Without thinking, I flinched away. He quickly stepped back and held up his arms. Oh God this was awkward.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I quickly unwrapped my scarf and took off my hat, letting my hair fall around me from beneath it. Jamie whistled low when he saw it cascading around me.
"That is some serious hair!" he praised. "My Mate would kill to have that shade." Jamie looked like he wanted to touch it, but thought better of it. "Anyway, back to your last question, our Alpha is really quite busy right now, you know with all the Daemons running around now because it's dark." I'd forgotten that this Pack was close to a Daemon rift and patrolled it. "So because of that, Ian has taken up some of his duties." Jamie led me deeper into the house and past what seemed to be a bar, complete with pool tables and darts. Jamie chatted and went up some grand stairs. I was grateful that I didn't have to try and fill in the silence because he was so chatty.
He stopped when we arrived outside a door with a plaque that simply stated 'BETA' on it. Subtle. This was my stop, I guess. Jamie knocked on the door and a male voice called from inside, saying we should come in. Jamie held the door open for me as I stepped inside.
"This woman is here for the cook position, Beta Ian," Jamie told him, talking like Ian was his sergeant, which I guessed he was.
"Thank you for bringing her here, Jamie," said the man behind the desk and Jamie nodded. He shut the door, but shot a wink my way just before he did. The door snicked behind him and suddenly I felt like a trapped rabbit. "You can sit down, if you like." I jumped and looked at Beta Ian who was looking me over. He had cropped brown hair and hazel eyes, and lounged in his desk chair. He seemed kinda friendly....
I perched on the end of the chair in front of his desk. At least now there was a solid piece of oak between us.
"So, what's your name?" He asked, leaning forward and rustling around for a piece of paper.
I swallowed. "Sy Summers," I told him and was quite proud that my voice didn't waver. He nodded and wrote it down on the paper he had found.
"What was your previous Pack?"
"The Gallo Pack." It was easy to answer the straight questions. My old pack was big enough that if he were to call asking about 'Sy' it wouldn't be too much of a stretch that they didn't know 'Sy', and that they wouldn't link 'Sy' to 'Sya'
