She woke up in Lewis' arms. For a moment she was happy. A warm bed, a lovely husband, a thriving career, what more could a person ask for? She admired his face as he slept, all the lines and the new wrinkles, his blonde hair and pink lips and she relished in their embrace, feeling all the intense, wordless love she could never express to him because no manner of speech could capture it. That's the curse of love: a feeling so great that it can never be fully communicated.
But then the moment ended and she remembered where she was and why she was there. Her father had perished at sea.
Accidental drowning, they said. She mentally scoffed. There was no way that that was what happened. She had no evidence on which to base her certainty, but she was certain all the same. Certain and determined.
She suddenly felt lips on her cheek. Lewis had woken up.
"Mornin' love." He smiled.
"Morning." She smiled back.
"How do you feel today?"
"Better. I just can't wrap my head around it, Lewis."
"You lost one of the most important people in your life. It's gonna be a while before you feel ok again, that's to be expected. But I'm right here and I'll always be right here. I love you."
"That's not what I mean Lewis. Of course I'm heart broken, but, something just doesn't add up."
"You mean you don't believe the police?"
"Of course I don't! Come on! Accidental drowning? No, not my dad. Something else happened and I'm gonna figure out what it was."
"Accidents happen Cleo. You're not thinking straight right now."
"Yes, I am Lewis. I know my father and I know the ocean and I'm telling you that something is wrong here."
"Are you sure this isn't because of the grief? Because you can't accept this loss."
"I'm sure and I'm gonna prove it."
"How?"
"Well, the first thing I'm gonna do is check out dad's boat. Maybe there's something on it that can tell us more about what happened that night."
"But the police still have the boat."
"Yea, but I have a plan."
"You realize we could get arrested?"
"You don't have to come with me, Lewis. This is my thing."
"Of course I'm coming with you."
"You don't even agree with me."
"Doesn't matter. You believe something is wrong and even though I don't agree, I'm not gonna let you handle it alone. If you get arrested, I get arrested. We're in this together, like we always are. So, what are we going to do?"
