When Steve and Sam said "a few of the boys", they didn't realize the entire deck had heard about the party.
Walking towards two small doors with a circular window in each, they heard loud violin music, as well as people singing along. Pounding on the floor of people dancing could also be heard, but it was faint. The smell of liquor filled the joyous air as well as a few wafts of bread and cheese. Few people stood outside the doors, mostly drunks who'd passed out or disgusted rich people lost below deck.
Steve and Sam wore basic clothes, Steve a grey sack shirt with a nude trench coat over it, as well as black suspenders connecting to his black pants; Sam a navy blue shirt, black suspenders and nude pants. Entering the doors, they were immediately greeted by shouts of strangers welcoming them in.
"Gentlemen! Welcome to the party!" A man shouted. He was very drunk, having spilled beer on his navy shirt and pants. Steve and Sam avoided shaking his hand, but he toppled over as soon as they stepped past him.
Inside the deck was the most people Steve had ever seen in one place. Men, women and children were packed like a can of sardines, tables too overcrowded and dirty, people in the center dancing, a small band of locals with violins, cellos, a trumpet and a tiny guitar playing, and laughing coming from every end as people shared their stories for traveling.
Smoke filled the corners as men threw what little money they had into the gambling tables scattered around the room. They played card games and one of them was even playing a dice game, but occasional shouts of losing or winning filled the room.
In the center stood men and women dancing around, smilies as wide as they could be. Women wore beautiful dresses that fell down to their ankles with colorful hats on their heads, while the men wore blue, grey, black or nude shirts, suspenders and thin pants. Children ran around chasing each other between the dancing people, usually followed by an animal. Mothers would grab their children and scold them for running, but they'd continue on as soon as she looked away.
On each table was many abandoned glasses of cheap beer, with a hard slice of bread or crumbs. Most people here rotated between the tables and picked up random glasses hoping to drink till they kneeled over.
Steve and Sam walked up to a table and were greeted by a friendly woman. She had black hair down to her shoulders and was wearing a fluid, soft, silhouette dress that came down to her ankles. Her voice sounded like an angel to Steve; proper and foreign. "Hello boys," her British accent was fairly noticeable. Sam abs Steve immediately made eye contact, with Same raising his eyebrow to say, "What a dame she is, your move Steve"
"Steven Rogers, pleasure to meet you" Steve said, avoiding Sam's ongoing stare. "This here is my friend Sam Wilson"
"It's a pleasure ma'am" Sam broke his gaze away from Steve and reached a hand out to her.
"The name is Carter, Peggy Carter." Her British accent was fairly noticeable now. "I am heading to America in recruitment for a..." her words cut off as she looked around. "Job interview" She finished, making eye contact with Steve.
"Hey what's with the accent, Queen Victoria?" the voice came from the table behind Peggy.
The man who yelled was an older gentleman, around Steve's age. He had a few wrinkles and an overall intimidating look. His body was built. muscular enough to hold his own in a fight and seemed like he had gotten in a few.
"I beg your pardon?" Peggy said, standing and turning behind her. Steve and Sam exchanged eye contact again, ready to step in if things got messy.
"I just didn't expect any tea and crumpets on this cruise ship" he spat out, making a few of his buddies at the table around him laugh.
Peggy walked over to the table, causing the man to stand up as well. "Place your right foot forward" She said calmly, to which everyone besides her was confused by. He did it, and looked at her with a disgusting smile.
"What are we gonna wrestle? Cause I know a few moves-" He was cut off by Peggy punching him square in the nose, cause him to fall back on the table. His friends looked at her in disbelief and none of them dared to pick a fight with her. The man who got punched had a bloody nose, to which he held and yelled cusses out at her. Steve and Sam started smiling and laughing to themselves and couldn't believe the sight they had witnessed.
Peggy turned back to them, a look off satisfaction on her face.
"Shall we dance gentlemen?"
Steve knew he was going to like her.
