My dreams were very troublesome that night, the mayor in all of them. The one i started with was Fernando was cackling like mad, my friends getting tortured. The next Fernando locked us in the dungeon while he tortured Horatio, Sunshade, and Coal. The third dream i won't even MENTION.
I woke up in a cold sweat, before anyone else. I stumbled outside for fresh air, to drive the nightmares away. I sat on a chair outside the house, enjoying the cool morning breeze. I didn't realize someone was beside me.
I look to see Horatio sit in the chair beside me, propping his cane against his chair. He nodded to me, staring out into the sunrise with me. It was quiet, just me and Horatio watching the sun rise and listening to the peaceful snores inside the guest house. Horatio broke the silence first.
"So... Natsu, wasn't it?" he asked. "I'm terrible at names."
"Yes, sir. My name is Natsu," i replied.
Horatio nodded. "Can i tell you a family secret?" he asked. "Its important you know, but you cannot tell anyone. Not even your fellow guild mates. My granddaughter is the princess who was kidnapped, and she'll hurt you if this gets out to non-family members other than you. I know you're a dragon slayer, which is why I'm telling you."
"Alright, but first off, how do you know I'm a Dragon Slayer? And why do i need to know this secret?" i ask him in confusion.
"The way Sunshade talked about your magic, the magic only dragons could do," he replied. "And its important you know the secret, because here, everyone doesnt know the true story. When you save my granddaughter, the secret I'm telling you might clear some strange things."
"Alright," i said. I knew i might as well get comfortable, because last time i was told a secret, it became a whole long story.
"So, this secret I'm about to tell you might sound strange and maybe even off the hook," Horatio began, "but I'm telling you, its been passed down for generations, so the family never forgets how they stopped the Dragon War."
"Dragon War?" i echo.
"It was long ago, in the first makings of Fairway," Horatio began. "Fairway was called Dust Road. Old Dust Road lived up its name. Except, it didn't happen in this city, but instead of another village, called Evening Moon, which settled in a valley the moon shown on every night. The dragons here were very feisty, having different tricks than the ones attacking the jungle cities. The dragons favorite tricks was to throw a human or animal in the air and flambè it. The common attacks were here in Evening Moon.
"A small family, our ancestors, who were called the Evenings, tried to keep to themselves. There was the mother who's name was Claire, with her two kids, Morgan and Trey. The father and the Uncle, Mike, went to fight against the dragons. Claire begged her husband and brother to return safely. Mike was wounded, and the father never returned. Claire grieved for her husband's loss, as she gazed into the dragon print outside her home with Morgan and Trey. The kids were sitting and playing in it, which gave Claire an idea for a treaty.
"The next day, she ran by her idea with the Mayor of Evening Moon. He thought it might work. The next day, the mayor called a stop to the Dragon Wars. Everyone was tired of the dragons attacking them, and the mayor proposed something different: an alliance. That's when Claire, Morgan, and Trey came next to the mayor. Claire added her idea: that her children choose a partner, a mate from the dragons, which will unite them.
"Crazy enough, Morgan married a prince from one of the tribes. Trey married a princess, but he didn't live to see his daughter. The Evenings were of royal descent in the first place, but they couldn't use their royal abilities in the new place. So that's how we, the NightFangs, became the way we are: we are the dragon, yet no one knows. Except you," Horatio finished.
I was pretty sure my mouth was hanging open, because it was now dry. I snapped it shut, thinking back to how all this started.
"What was the Father and Mayor's name?" i ask.
Horatio shrugged. "The mayor's name was taken from the textbooks, because he killed one of our family members after that day, killed her in the form of a dragon because she dropped his bread," he replied. "The father... no one knew his name. He kept it secret, because of how things were. And being one of the family, you kept the place in order so no horrible person destroys the peace, or the curse of horribleness for the dragons being gone come over. I was King, but i stepped down when my wife died. My only daughter took the throne when her brother, Michal, refused. She died later, at the hands of her maid because the maid wanted her husband, who died before. The maid blamed Maria, and she was strangled to death. Now, Hisakata is kidnapped, her 20th birthday a 2 days away, the only heir to the throne. You must find her!"
"I will, Horatio. I promise," i said.
Horatio nodded as Erza came out the door. Before he left, he added, "It stays between us." I knew he meant the secret.
As i watched him walk away and hear Erza wake the others, it almost made me wonder if Dragon Slayers can be descendants? I knew we weren't, learning all about us, so i shoved the thought out of my head.
When Erza reappeared, she asked, "Ready to get some information?"
~Author's note: The secret sounded way less weird in my head, so if there needs to be a clearer explanation, comment. Sorry for the mess up. Spottedcraft out!~
