Gentle Goodbyes

"I'd be betraying my family if I left them, and Romeo and Juliet is a pretty good story, is it not? Star-crossed lovers, forbidden love."

----

Months have passed since that night.

Tension is high in the castle.

Wilbur had been attempting to make more time to spend with you since you hadn't been allowed to leave at all.

You and Dream had grown closer in your relationship, but never went farther than kissing and the occasional soft touches.

You were content with that.

You started to fully trust George and they grew close. Your younger brothers still despised him.

It was now a couple of weeks before Christmas, the day after Christmas is when Phil, Techno, Wilbur, and Dream would be leaving. The castle was decorated in silver tinsel, and the dining hall boring a large tree.

The tree was decorated with bright blue lights, silver beads draped across each row of branches; a bright shining, gold star sat at the top.

The ornaments didn't match it at all.

Tubbo had insisted on colorful ornaments while Techno argued on matching the ornaments to the decorations. Eventually, Tubbo won the argument, Techno blamed it on Tubbo's "cute privileges".

Your room had green and red fairy lights strung along the walls for the holiday. Your bed had gotten an upgrade and now had curtains, especially after the last time someone (Tommy) walked into your room without knocking.

You stood on your balcony, your hot breath visible in the freezing air. Standing next to you is George, leaning against the balcony railings. Both of you watching as Techno and Dream trains the troops. Your eyes are trained on Dream's every movement.

Sapnap is a part of the group, clearly proving to be better than the rest of them. He'll occasionally look at you and give you a goofy smile.

It makes you laugh a little.

Tommy and Tubbo are out in the village with Ranboo and Sam. Your mother and father are out in another kingdom to try and gain an alliance. Wilbur is somewhere; probably in bed with Sally and Amica.

The castle is quiet without your family there. It feels barren. The feeling of loneliness deep in the pit of your stomach. You miss them. Your family that is. And Dream too despite seeing him.

You watch as a couple of the soldiers shoot you "charming" grins before Dream smacks them in the head. Possibly out of possessiveness over you, possibly to scold them from getting distracted.

Maybe both.

Every so often you'll catch Dream's eyes. He had stopped wearing the porcelain mask once Winter hit. The material would get too cold. You'd see the way the corners of his eyes crinkle when he looks at you. That crinkle shows that he's smiling at you.

He would rather be with you than deal with a bunch of idiots.

Techno looks annoyed with all of them. You could hear him yelling. His yelling would get louder whenever one of them would make an inappropriate comment.

Techno would rather be with the woman he had met at the ball than deal with them.

You and George stood there in silence. A comfortable one. Just a foot away from one another, bundled up in warm clothing.

It's cold out. Of course, it is. It's always cold and snowing, but it's colder.

You wonder what will happen after the war. You hope that everything can go back to normal. You hope that you and Dream could finally do all the things you've been wanting to do.
