Footsteps behind us put a sudden stop to our conversation. The girl that stalked off down the path has returned. The look she was giving me sent chills down my spine but the look she was giving Denis could have ascended him right then and there.
Denis scrambles up and away from me, putting his hands up. "It's-this isn't what you think. I-I was just explaining-"
She sighs. "Shut up, Denis. I don't care what you do anymore. Go talk to other girls right after a breakup for all I care. Here, forgot this, dimwit" She's about to toss the jacket around her waist, but in a split second, rage spreads out over her face and instead chucks it as hard as she can at Denis. I flinch and try to press myself against the bench to make myself invisible, but her full attention is on Denis anyways.
I hear a yelp from Denis and the girl gives me one more withering stare before she stalks away. "Ow..." Denis groans. I get up and go over to him.
"You okay?" I frown at my concern for this stranger who apparently cheated on his girlfriend once, but I just can't help but feel a little bad for him, seeing how hard he's trying. Denis pulls back the jacket to reveal a little cut on his forehead from the zipper.
I grab some napkins from my forgotten bookbag on the floor and tend to his cut. While I'm wiping away some of the blood, the girl from earlier catches my eye again. I see her in the corner of my vision. I turn towards her to see her better and immediately refocus on Denis' cut, suddenly afraid for my life. She was looking right at me, with so much anger in her eyes I was too scared to look back.
"Hey, your ex is giving me death stares." I try to joke with Denis. He looks to where I motion.
"Well, you might want to avoid her for the next few...months. She has a bit of a temper."
"Maybe you should give me her name, so I can avoid her. I do value my life quite a bit." I say with worried glances at the girl, she's just standing there, looking at me. I'm genuinely scared.
Denis sighs. "Sure, her name is Den-"
I wake up with a start to someone calling my name. "Scarlet? You awake?" I blink away the remnants of my dream, already forgetting what it was about. After a few moments of trying to wake myself up, I place the voice with a name. Kai.
I slowly sit up, it's still dark outside. "It's almost time." Kai says. I nod. Dr. Silas had caved and agreed to give Ophelia a spot as one of the heads, replacing the three that previously controlled the Influencers cars with just her. The meeting would be held early in the morning to make sure the Influencers get the info so they won't rebel.
Kai sits down next to me. Dominic is still sleeping in the corner and Nora is nowhere to be seen. We've taken up all of car 2 and I suddenly feel a little guilty looking at all the extra space we have. This car has suddenly become our little spot.
"I never really got a chance to thank you for before." Kai starts. He's right, we never got a chance to just sit down and talk because he's been so busy as a head, but I think people are settling down and getting into a routine, giving him space to breathe. "For saving my life, too that one time."
"Too? Which other one were you thanking me for." I ask with a smile in my voice.
"The snapping me out of this stupid delusion. That we were meant to be on this train and that we should accept it as fate. I can't express how scared, but relieved I was that I was not alone, although it may not have seemed like it."
"I felt the same way." I confess. "You're welcome. I guess I should also thank you too though."
"For what?"
