It had all started when Aaron Row had gone through the window during History class, but let's back up a bit.
This story is about his soon-to-be best friend, Ren Lennon -not related to John Lennon- and her life in 'The Big Adventure'. Ren was...difficult to describe, but if you had to call her something it would be peculiar, or maybe lonely. Her life had always been either shades of black or white, never gray. For example, she excelled at most of her classes...except Geometry and History. She had failed them two times already. She loves to talk to her friends, but she will not talk to strangers at all, even if her life depended on it -happened once, long story.
Ironically enough though, she loved to see the shades of grey in every situation, decisions that people around her never took, being caught up with their inner turmoil. Her peculiar life had often led to mental breakdowns, mostly about her failing classes. Ren was not one to take failure well, especially when she got top marks in everything else. Strangely, that failure had made her love these classes, or class to be more precise. She still hates Geometry.
Another great example of her two-shade life is the fact that she loved running, even though she didn't have that tan, skinny, athletic body it requires. Quite the contrary, she was as white as snow and curvy, too curvy according to every coach she had ever met. It was one of the things that got her regular visits from the school's bullies, but she had never given them any attention.
So, give or take her life had been pretty normal, albeit with only two shades. But that was about to change, thanks to a certain boy. Fast forward to History class.
The teacher was talking about the Industrial Revolution. No one was paying attention -and yet, somehow, they still passed the class- except Ren, who was scribbling down notes about the lesson. She really wanted to pass this class; she could not accept another failure.
She was sitting by the window, her glasses sliding down her nose due to the heat outside. At summers like these she was like a furnace, while at winter she was stone cold. It was a beautiful day outside. In fact, it was the last day of school, supposedly a peaceful one before the final exams started two weeks later. Little did she know that in a few seconds, Aaron would go through the window and specifically land on her. The foundation of a great friendship really.
Tick. Tack. Tick. Tack.
The clock was ticking way too loud for her liking, she couldn't focus on her notes. Not that they helped. She had taken the exact same notes two times before and she still couldn't manage to pass the class. Come on, Ren. Focus she thought before scribbling down something the teacher said.
Tick. Tack. Tick. Tack.
She was really annoyed by this clock. Maybe she could ask the teacher to deactivate it.
Tick. Tack. Tick. Tack.
Ugh, why today? She thought as she ended one more sentence. She really wanted to finish the notes and storm out of the class. Some fresh air would do her good.
Tick. Tack. Tick. Tack.
At nine o'clock sharp, the window was smashed, sending shards of glass everywhere as someone went through it. But Ren didn't have time to process all that, as that someone landed on her. And it was painful, the surprise adding to her pain since he came out of nowhere.
The boy fell on her, making her cry out. The desk hurt her ribs as they both went down. Their faces were only a few centimeters apart when he looked at her and whispered "Go on an adventure with me." before blacking out. Great introduction, he must be super dramatic, she internally whined as her classmates took him off of her.
As they were hoisting him up, Ren noticed something. Apart from the glass shards and cut wounds, the boy had other wounds too. Bruises and scars traced his neck, and from the red stain on his shirt she could tell that he might have been stabbed too.
That spiked her curiosity, so naturally she decided to investigate a bit. She offered to take him to the nurse. He had fallen on her and asked her to join him in an adventure after all, she would need explanations. She half-answered half-snubbed the nurse's questions, as others answered them for her. She was a victim, and supposedly still surprised and stressed according to the nurse. No need for her to answer all that, right? She sat down beside him and she waited. History class could wait, she was sure she would fail again anyway.
She had to wait two hours. Damn that dude surely sleeps a lot. He slowly opened his eyes as she was finishing some homework -what? It was still a school day! – and he looked at her with interest in his eyes.
"Sorry for falling on you. We were fighting you see-" he said looking down at his hands "-and she threw me on the window.".
"We? Who were you fighting?" Ren asked.
"The Witch." he simply said, like that answered all her questions. They remained silent for a while, staring at each other when the boy spoke again.
"I'm Aaron Row, and you?"
"Ren Lennon." said Ren with some fake disinterest.
"Oh, like the singer?" she sighed as she remembered the countless puns her friends used on a daily basis because of her last name.
"Yes, but we're not related," she answered.
"Great. Well, Lennon, you look like good adventurer material. Wanna go on an adventure with me?" he asked with a smirk. She thought about it. It's not like she had something to lose. School was fine, but a tad bit boring really. She had friends she would miss, sure, but no one that close to her. Her parents loved her and gave her the freedom to do such things, so they wouldn't worry a lot if she disappeared for a while. Her life was ordinary right now. Too ordinary.
Though, she couldn't just give up everything and leave this town with nothing but a bag full of school books and enough money to make it to the next town. But that's what a normal person would say. Good thing she had never liked normal.
With a matching smirk, she answered "First of all, you already asked me that when you fell on me, you wanker. Secondly, sure, when do we leave?"
He had a huge shit-eating grin when he suddenly corrected her "When I fell for you, fair lady." it was fun -for Aaron- to watch her get all red. Until she smacked him hard in the head.
He quickly continued speaking, in fear of Ren's smacks. "We are leaving now. The Witch will find me sooner or later and we have to find Chris. I have to introduce you too; we'll make a great Golden Trio!"
"We're not in a Harry Potter movie Aaron." she said, teasing him.
"Oh, shut up it was a great reference and you know it!" he retorted flustering, earning a laugh from her. Sweet, sweet revenge she thought devilishly.
"No, it wasn't."
"Hey!"
She followed Aaron through the door as they bickered back and forth about Harry Potter. She was excited to join this adventure, but mostly she was finally happy with the turn of events in her life.
