13 hour memory ~ 7

( Louis POV )

"From yesterday's me, to today's me. You only have a 13-hour memory span. This is due to an accident that happened four years ago. Please accept the fact these events did happen. I'm writing down what you need to know in order to live.
First, you must read this diary every morning. This is your memory. Everything about you is written in here. Second, you must write in the diary every day. What you did, what you talked about, medical records... Be as precise as possible." Harry is reading the first page of my diary. This is something I have to read everyday. Every morning. Every single day.

He continues to read it aloud. "And then, third, try to avoid contact with others as much as possible. Someone may take advantage of your condition and do awful things to you. Or conversely, you may cause someone a great deal of trouble yourself. If you meet anyone, record their characteristics and information as accurately as possible."

He turns to look at me. "Huh... So how did you described me?"

"At first, I described you as an older male student with curly hair who comes to the train station around 3:00 PM." I say to him shyly.

"Oh, I see. I'm not that old though. He teases.

"I know but....You see, time stopped for me. That was a little over four years ago now."

"Wow, that's rough." He starts to turn to the next page of my diary. I put my hand on top of his to stop him.

"That's all I can let you read." I take my diary away from him.

"Oh, sorry. I guess it is your diary." He stand up and goes down to the train tracks.

"No. No." I stand up and follow him. Going down the train tracks too. "This diary is me." I say to him.

We walk on the train tracks together.

"Thirteen hours... that's how long your memory span is?" He ask. He looks down at the tracks.

"If I wake up at 10:00 AM, I can remember what happens until 11:00 PM. But for every hour beyond that, I also lose an hour of memory. By midnight, everything before 8:00 AM has been erased. And at 10:00 the next morning, I don't remember anything that happened before 11:00 PM the day before." I look at him and he looks confused.

"I'm sorry if this is a lot to take in." I say quietly.

"Oh no it's okay." He gives me a smile but it disappears. "So hold on--then that means when you wake up, you've forgotten everything about me?"

"No, that's not true." I shake my head, disagreeing.

"What?" He looks at me surprised.

"I can recall my most important memories over and over again.
And I can retain those same important memories for another 13 hours.
If I read my diary at 11: 00 PM and recall an event before I go to sleep, I still remember it when I wake up. Like spending time with you and the fact that I have a memory defect."
I can see that he's smiling. Happy that I haven't forgotten him and everything we've done.

I continue speaking. "My life is very uneventful. I don't go to school, or have any friends. I really don't do anything. If I just daydream at the station, there's nothing I need to remember."

I stop walking and stand there. Harry stops too and looks at me.

"What's wrong?" He says.

"There's no reason for me to live. It's very easy if I simply relinquish everything."

"Yeah, but if you do that, then...!"

"I have nothing to offer anyone! So the least I can do is try not to be a burden.
That's my goal in life. But, it's not something that is that easy to do. I've become a burden just by living..." I stop. I can feel the tears starting to come out.

I wipe my eyes and continue. "And the worst part of it all is every day I simply forget the fact that I was even a burden."

I look at him and smile. "Harry. I'm going to tell you... I'm going to tell you a joke."

Sorry this was kinda short >.<

So here's a simple explanation to Louis' 13 hour memory if you don't understand it quite yet.

•Louis can only retain memory from 10 AM to 10 PM ( 13 hours )

• After 11 PM he completely forgets everything.

~ But if he reads his diary at 11 PM and recalls something before he goes to sleep, he'll remember it when he wakes up.

~ And if recalls something over and over again he can remember it for another 13 hours.

~ If he goes beyond his time limit, he'll lose an hour of memory.

• What Harry was reading in the beginning of the chapter, is something Mr. Payne wrote in Louis diary, so he knows what do to each day.

• This is why he's always taking pictures and writing in his diary.

I'll explain about Louis accident later in the book.
