the night was slow. and a slow night, meant slow business.

to the girls right was chantal, and much like sapphire in this specific moment, she was was slumped over the bar with her head in her hands.

the tone in the club was mellow, but the thoughts raging in sapphire's head were anything but. she had let a thousand dollar deal walk away from her last night, and the sting was still as prominent as ever.

losing out to her was like a kick to the gut. it meant you were a loser, and she was anything but that. she wouldn't let herself think it. the constant nagging in her head was starting to become unbearable to the point of insanity, until her attention was taken.

"are you the bitch who threatened my friend yesterday?"

to say she was caught off guard wouldn't be totally wrong. she was used to angry club goers every once in a while, but she just could not take this guy seriously. not with that hair color.

"and you are?," she slowly but surely pulled her head from her hands and stood up, facing whoever this was that thought they had a right to speak to her like this.

"not important. are you the bitch who talked back to my friend yesterday?"

he said bitch again.

"are you the ridiculously annoying prick who won't give me a straight answer as to why he's here?," she tilted her head to the side, lips formed into a pout, arms folded at her chest.

he scoffed.

that was all she needed to know that this guy was all talk.

"what? because i said something a little mean?"

she watched intently as he snapped his head back to face her, eyes narrowing as his jaw tightened up at the sight of a fairly relaxed sapphire.

"you're sapphire rubenstein, arent you?"

the tall, bronzed skinned girl flashed a tight smile his way before reluctantly claiming her identity.

"i am. and you are?"

"none of your business," he copped a smug grin as he moved his arms in an outward motion, hands still tucked into his jacket pockets.

"judging by that god awful dye job i'm not sure i'd want it to be my business anyways."

was she really standing in the middle of her club bantering with a stranger? sure, an attractive stranger, but still. the answer is yes, yes she was.

things like arguing came so quick to her. she thrived off seeing the other person get a bit flustered and not  knowing how to make a comeback. she could do this all day.

he didn't want her to catch it but she did anyways. he smiled, running his tongue over his bottom lip just to slightly cover it.

"for the record, i got this professionally done," he claimed, gesturing to his freshly dyed red locks.

"go ahead and do yourself a favor and professionally get the fuck out of my club."

raising his eyebrows and letting them fall seconds later, he glanced quickly to sapphire once more, then to the ginger slumped behind the counter before he cautiously slipped out.

"can you believe that guy?," sapphire had asked, making her way back behind the bar as she took her perch right next to chantal.

grinning as she cocked an eyebrow at her friend, she spoke, "nonetheless, you seemed like you were having fun."

"arguing is always fun," sapphire remarked, playfully nudging her friend.

there was just nothing fun about being civil anymore. whatever chance she had to prove her point, maybe throw in an insult or two, she was gonna take it. no matter the cost.

"do you know if hans is working tonight?"

the name catching her totally off guard, the brunette spun to face chantal, wondering why she was asking.

she didn't have to say anything, for as chantal got the memo.

"oh fuck that's right- saph i'm sorry you know i-"

"that's enough, chan. i don't know. why are you asking?"

the truth is, sapphire didn't care why she was asking. she cared as to know why chantal thought it was ok to mention him in conversation. especially after everything that had happened in recent events.

"i'm sorry the name just slipped i-"

saph raised a hand, ordering her to stop her spluttering of words.

hans. hans whitman. that mysterious asshole with icy blue eyes, malicious dark hair to match and the palest skin known to man. sapphire despised him.

she couldn't stand the way his laugh was the best thing she'd ever heard, or stand the way he was tall, looming the perfect amount over her or the way he had the straightest and most brightest teeth she'd ever seen, making for an unforgettable smile. she couldn't stand any of that.

but most importantly she couldn't stand the fact that he thought he was so entitled he could break her heart and walk away unharmed. walk away a cheater.

she hated him. and she didn't think it would ever change.

"don't bother. i told him to stop coming around and that means don't continue to fucking work here."

the redhead paused for a moment, contemplating what she said. she hadn't had a problem with hans, that is, until he did what he did to sapphire.

the pair had been together for 6 months, and friends for years before that. him and chantal were her only friends, the only people she could trust and let in. but she was wrong. he had betrayed her, and in a way she didn't plan out before hand.

everything they knew about each other, everything they kept between one another, every story, every secret, gone. washed away, and out the window for good. things she'd never tell another soul stuck with him, and that irked her.

"oh," the redhead fell short.

the small distance between them grew to feel like miles and the air, tense and stiff, tinged with words unspoken.

they hadn't really talked about the hans situation since it happened, and that was 3 months ago. for all chantal knew, sapphire wanted to keep it that way, and she was right. she did want to keep it that way.

sapphire knew she'd have to see him again sometime, that was a given. but she could ignore him for as long as she wanted. for as long as she hoped. she could pretend he didn't exist and erase the plenty memories still left of him lingering in her head.

she wanted him gone, and that would only happen if she just pretended like he didn't exist.

"tomorrow's friday right?"

"yeah."

great. "you'll be working the main floor with me right?," anticipation laced in sapphire's words.

"you know it."
