It had been two weeks since the encounter Asmaa had with the sorry excuse of an ass. Apparently, that book was the last copy there ever was. And now she was just stuck to reading online, which hurt her back from leaning down for so long.
She winced as she got up from the awkward position and cracked her back. She walked down the hallway, stopping once she saw the calendar. She let out a frustrated sigh, just 10 days until school starts. And the back to school commercials didn't make it any better. "IM OFF! TELL MOM I WENT TO THE BOOK SIGNING" she yelled, as she put on her shoes. She waited to hear a response. "Ok!!" She heard. She nodded and closed the door behind. Unlike the rest of the world, Asmaa kind of enjoyed winter. The pure white snow was rare, in her opinion. Not something you want to miss. A smile tugged on her lips, as she put on her hoodie. She felt her phone buzz, she got it out of her pocket and opened it.
Avery: hiya
Asmaa: are you there yet?
Avery: ehh, maybe?
Asmaa: you're not even dressed up yet are you?
Avery: maybe I am
Asmaa: forget it. I'll meet you there in 10 min.
Avery: roger that!
She chuckled at the screen, not bothering to look up. She bumped into a couple of people, not bothering to apologize. She couldn't wait to meet her favorite author in person.
10 minutes later.....
Asmaa arrived at the crowded area, a long line the reached two stores lied in front of her. She was going to kill Avery if she didn't catch up with the line.
She saw a hand waving at her from afar, she thanked god her friend actually bothered to wait in line. She walked over to her and punched her arm lightly. "You actually used your head for once" she chuckled. "Respect your elders, young lady" she responded, struggling to hold the stack of books she held. Her friend cocked an eyebrow at her, wondering what all those books were here for. Some of them aren't even the authors' books. "I just like them to sign my books" her friend said, noticing her expression. "Oookaaay then" she replied, opening her bag. She widened her eyes and start to dig through it. "Shit" she muttered. "What?"
"I forgot my book" she said, stomping her feet on the ground. "What am I gonna do no-ACK" she screamed, slipping on a patch of ice. It was like one of those clichè movies where the heroine slips and gets caught by the main character. And that was her current situation. Strong hands caught her before she made contact with the ground. The anonymous person got her on her feet. She turned around and thanked him. But the familiar face smiled at her. It was the douche bag from two weeks ago. She took her thanks back and squinted at him. "Hello" he said."this must be fate!" He snickered. "Asshole" Asmaa growled. "Hey Ian" her friend said. "Avery" he nodded. Asmaa looked at both of them back and forth and took a step back. "You know each other?" She said. "Remember that transfer student I talked about?" Her friend said. "The one that left but came a few months ago?" She replied. "Yeah that's him" she said. He smiled at her, holding the book from the other day. The anger she thought she buried came back for more. Her ears went red from the frustration that dawned upon her. She watched as her friend and him conversed. She tried to ignore him by taking out her Phone. But she couldn't help but notice the bed head he had, she doubted that he even knew. She rolled her eyes, despite the sudden urge she had to tame it. She coughed, catching their attention. "Is she in the same school as us?" He asked, ignoring the glare she gave him. Her friend nodded, putting the books down. "Our age?"
Her friend shook her head. He gave her a confused look and tilted his head. "A year younger or maybe a couple of months younger" she replied. He nodded in recognition. "You can just ask me, you know. I'm right here" she said, reminding them of her existence. "Yeah, but you wouldn't answer would you" he smirked. Her friend clapped and said "wow he knows you already!" Asmaa smacked her head and walked in line.
She didn't notice that they had a few more minutes until they get to meet the author. Her excitement made a comeback and she took a book from Avery. "I can't wait!" She whispered. "How are you on such a fine day?" The author asked as he opened the book Asmaa handed to him. "I'm feeling great now that I got to meet you!" She said, almost jumping with joy. "What's your name, oh voracious reader" the middle aged man chuckled. "Asmaa. With two a's in the end" she replied. "Hey dad" she heard behind her. "Hello Ian- Ian?!" He said, dropping his pen. "Long time no see?" Ian smiled.
'Dad?!' She thought.
