You would have never found your way out of the prison if Sam hadn't been carrying you. When you'd made the observation that the halls were built like a maze, you had been correct - luckily for you though, Sam knew that maze better than anyone, and had delivered you out into the streets of the city in almost no time.
It felt good to be back out into the sunlight again. Free, at least for now.
You expected Sam to put you down once you were back out onto the cobbled streets, but he didn't even stop, darting down into the space between two buildings near where you had come out of the colosseum, heading in the direction of the agora. "Sam?"
He hummed, keeping his eyes focused on the streets ahead as he jogged.
"You don't have to carry me - it'll slow you down-"
"You're injured." Sam said. "You walking will slow us down even more."
You supposed he had a point with that. So you let him carry you, and watched as people stared. You supposed it was not every day that you saw the warden running through the streets with someone who was very obviously battered and bruised in his arms.
"Vesapasian will have the guards after us in no time." Sam said, his breathing beginning to pick up as he ran. "We've got to get to the docks as soon as we can."
"The docks?" You asked.
"There's always cargo ships coming and going." Sam said. "I figured we'd hop aboard one of those and stowaway until we find somewhere we want to settle down."
You watched as the bags he had picked up beat against his back with the rhythm of his running, and how he turned to cut through the agora - the quickest way to get to the shore. "You planned this."
"Some of it." Sam said. "If things went south, I needed a backup plan."
Sam took the stairs up to the agora two at a time, bounding by people doing their shopping and beggars alike. Not so long ago, you yourself had been one of them - now here you were, making a daring escape in the arms of the prison warden, who happened to be your lover.
What a turn of events.
Reaching the top of the stairs, Sam broke out into a flat sprint across the tiled mosaic floor. You gripped around his shoulders, watching as you tore past the guards stationed at each of the pillars. You had made it across half the floor before a shout echoed out, and the men snapped to attention, drawing their swords as they picked up chase after you.
It only took Sam two steps to cross the mosaic of Anoitos and Sofos, the twin gods emerald inlaid eyes glittering up at you in the sunlight.
The guards of the agora gave chase even after you left the pillars of the marketplace, following you down the streets leading to the shore. Sam just kept running though, barely breaking a sweat at the effort as he tore down the streets, avoiding citizens and obstacles alike.
"How many are following us?" He panted.
You picked your head up, glancing over his shoulder to count the guards giving chase. You could see five - their swords drawn as they gave chase. "Five." You said.
Sam hummed. "Hopefully we can lose them before we get down to the docks."
That was all the warning you got before Sam took a sharp turn, leaping down from a the edge of the road down onto the next path, sending a cloud of dust up from the pebbled road. The shot of adrenaline from the jump scared away any urge to sleep that was still lingering behind your eyes, and your fingers dug into Sam's shoulders.
He didn't pause for long before he was tearing down the road again, the guards still working their way down the ledge Sam had leaped over. You laughed, watching as one of the men giving chase placed his foot wrong and skidded down the cliff, sliding down like a disgruntled beaver. Soon though, they were disappearing from sight as Sam ducked down another alley.
"Almost there." He said.
Sure enough, you could smell the salt in the air. "Almost there." You repeated, winding your arms around Sam's shoulders and pulling yourself upright some. In between the buildings as Sam ran past, you could see the ocean. Almost there.
You glanced back behind you to see only three guards still on your tail.
You could outrun three guards.
Sam took a sharp turn, darting down one last alley before he was sprinting down the wooden planks that lined the shore, eyes scanning over the ships that were lined up at the docks. A sail unfurling down the line caught your attention, and you pointed. "There!"
Sam picked up speed, heading towards the ship, a small smile curling on his face. "I see it."
The ship was obviously heading somewhere very far from here - she was laden with cargo, and just beginning to pull away from the docks. Sam slowed as you approached the side of the ship, slinging the bags off his shoulder and pressing them into your hands. "Don't drop those."
Sam's grip shifted, letting you down to stand on your own two feet. Reaching out, he grabbed onto one of the loose ropes hanging from the ship, using the rigging to begin scaling the side.
Behind you, you could hear the clatter of the guards footsteps as they hurried down the dock, shouting at you and Sam to stop.
"Come on." Sam reached back, extending a hand as the ship began to drift free of the dock.
The guards were shouting for the ship to stop now, but it was too late. The bow was already past the edge of the dock, and soon the stern would be too.
You slipped your hand into Sam's, and let him pull you off the wooden planks of the dock and into his arms, holding you to his chest as your ticket to freedom headed out to sea.
