"You coming to the party tonight at Trae's?" Dani asks as we walk down the hallways of the school.
"Yes, as always, he's my boyfriend. I'm expected to show up. Not like I'd want to miss it," I reply.
"Great! We can hang out and get drunk and have sex! Why waste Senior year right?"
"Do you need a ride?" I ask blowing off her question.
"No, I have volleyball today. I'll see you there," she says walking off. I head outside and feel the cool fall air. Its to warm for a jacket so I throw it to the passenger seat when I get to my car.
Starting the car up and driving out of the parking lot I think of today's events. I had managed to piss Mr. Lin off by sticking a tack in his seat before class started, earning an after school detention on Monday. I was also able to get an A- on my math test for cheating off of the boy who sat in front of me. I'd say it was a pretty good day. Now to deal with my family.
I parked in the driveway, turning the car off and grabbing my jacket. I was only partially prepared for the sight of my family, for when I walked in my mother and father were standing in the kitchen bickering about who knows what.
"I'm home," I yell shaking the house as I slammed the door.
"Lafayette!" my mom says happily, "How was school?" Layfayette is my full name. My mom got the name off of some tv show she watched as a kid and thought it was a 'beautiful' name. When I googled the name, I found out it was a detective guy named Layfette Baker, he even had the same last name, what a coincidence. He was some United States investigator during the Civil War.
I got the name Lana when me and Dani became friends in first grade, she said my full name was to hard to say. Now everyone but my mom uses Lana, except when my dad is angry with me.
"You don't have to pretend I didn't hear you," I say turning on my heel to go upstairs. My mother just sighed turning to glare at my father, so he would make me answer her questions.
"Lana, please answer your mothers question instead of being rude," my dad said.
With a very loud and dramatic sigh I turned to my mom, "I had the bestest day mom! I aced my math test by cheating and got an after school for putting a thumb tack on the teachers seat before class. Now if you will excuse me," I reply with a fake smile, going upstairs before she could say more.
I went past Dylan's room after seeing he got home safe. "How long?" I ask.
"Since before I got home," he replied trying to concentrate on his video games. We have gotten used to mom and dad fighting so much, I ask the same question everyday.
I went to my room closing the door and changing into my ripped jeans and Green Day t-shirt. Around 7:00 I headed downstairs, grabbing my hoodie from the closet. "I'm going out," I yell to my family, who sat in the kitchen eating dinner.
"Lafayette, come eat dinner with us won't you?" Mom asks standing up. I slip into my shoes, bending down to tie them.
"No I'm supposed to be meeting Dani and Trae tonight," I reply opening the front door.
"Can't you tell then that your eating dinner with your family and being civil?"
"No mom I can't, this is important to me."
"Getting drunk every weekend is important? Don't think I don't know Lafayette."
"I would never think that mother."
"Good, now come eat dinner with us."
"That doesn't change the fact that I'm going."
"Lafayette Juliana Baker, you are staying in this house. You are sitting down and eating one meal with us!" Mom yelled at me, sounding exhausted.
"No mother, I'm going out, I'm getting drunk, I'm going to have sex, and I'm going to make mistakes tonight. Just like a normal person does! I'm not sitting at home being your precious puppet!" I scream back walking out and slamming the door.
"Look what you've done," my mother screams at my father, "its your fault she's this way!" I rolled my eyes. It wasn't his fault, it was hers. After what she had done to me the past four years? I wasn't going back to that.
