PLEASE READ! (Sputnik 2 Info)
I'm absolutely outraged! I just found out more about the Sputnik dog (Laika) and here is what happened:
Laika was an innocent stray dog whom was taken for an experiment in Russia that was supposedly considered "humane" even though there was nothing humane about it. The experiment was to send a dog to space to see how long it could survive. They were originally going to send a human being who was on death row but they decided that sending a human would be cruel.
They had no intention on bringing Laika back to earth after sending her, they wanted to let her die. She was merely an experiment to them.
Before being sent to space she was looked after well and thought that the humans who took her were saving her from the sad life on the streets she previously lived. She trusted the humans.
When she was sent up to space in the satellite everything went well... Until a problem occurred with the cooler. The cooler stopped working and it got warmer and warmer in the satellite very quickly. Laika was trapped in there all alone and scared in space.
After a few minutes Laika died of overheating. She was betrayed by the humans she thought she could trust.
Sputnik 2 (The satellite Laika was in) came closer to earth and became to fall and set aflame with Laika's corpse inside. Imagine if the cooler never failed and Laika burned to death while falling towards the earth in a broken satellite...
Laika's remains were never found.
The Russians built a statue in memory of Laika which is a kind act. However, a statue cannot make up for what happened to the poor innocent little dog who lost a life for no reason at all. Laika made history at the price of her own life.
I still believe that Dear Sputnik is about Laika (Sputnik 2) and not Sputnik 1 which was just a regular orbit. Carefully listen to the lyrics of the song with Laika in mind and you'll see what I mean.
I've been crying about this dog for weeks now. I feel so bad for it.
