Chapter 1

The dark reaper watched as a dull orange fox stumbled from the compound. Multiple scars marked its body, along with some fresh wounds. He watched as the bright yellow flames licked at the dry night air, desperate for something to burn. The fox walked shakily forwards, coughing and breathing heavily. The trees at the edge of a large pine forest had burst into flame, beginning to fall onto the sandy dirt of the lot outside the large building. A tree fell near the fox, but it managed to keep clear of its path. The reaper sighed in relief as the fox seemed a bit stronger now. It began to trot cautiously down the edge of the lot and slowed when it reached the edge of the forest fire. It wasn't safe though, a large pine had caught fire and a loud creak signaled the beginning fall. The fox yipped in surprise and began to move out of the way, but it wasn't fast enough. The tree fell, pinning most of the fox beneath it.

I woke up in a strange place. Long hallways and hard stone-tiled floors. I tried to remember where I was, but I couldn't. The last place I remembered being was in the mountains after leaving Kinzu. I sat up, but winced in pain at a deep slash on my leg. I shifted to my feral form and limped down one of the halls. I pricked my ears at a growling sound through one set of doors. I pushed through to see two large reapers and what looked like militia soldiers, but they wore a band on their arm that I didn't recognize. The smell of smoke filled the air and I ducked back through the doors. Harsh orange light filled a passageway to my left. I ran back the way I came, hoping to find an exit. The air was now thick with smoke and the fire heated the tiled floor, cracking the blackstone. The sharp edges cut my paws as I ran.

I saw an outside door and sighed relief, pushing it open and stumbling out and away from the flames. I walked forwards shakily, coughing and choking on the acrid smoke. I stood until I stopped shaking before starting to run down one side of a large dirt lot. A tree fell close to where I stood, making me jump. I ran further down the lot, away from the smoke. I reached an area away from the forest fire where I could breathe better. I sat down, watching the large building be engulfed in flames. I heard a large creak as a tree began to fall. I yelped and began to run away from the flames.

I felt the heat of the flames before the tree hit and the weight of the tree before the scorch from the embers. The tree pinned me to the ground, smoke filling the air around me as the hot embers burned my fur. My eyes watered from the heat and the smoke. I had already lost feeling in my legs and was no longer able to lift my head. The weight of the tree pushed the air from my lungs and my breathing became shallow. I could see a fuzzy black shape moving towards me as my vision began to blur. Darkness clouded my visibility and a dull pain remained as I passed out.

---------

I slid down the hillside, to where the small fox had been pinned under the large pine. Its head dropped to the ground as I got closer, eyes glazed and breathing shallow. I tried to roll the tree off, but it was still smoldering and it burned my paws. I need to get Printsa and Moon, they can help. I took a final glance back at the fox before turning and running back to camp.

---------

I entered camp gasping for breath after the long run both of the other reapers stood up and rushed to my side,
