Chapter 3

-Jalen

"heey ma, what you cookin'?" I ask, trying to taste a piece of cornbread.

"boy get your hand out this food, it'll be ready in a second." She responded, hitting my hand.

I went upstairs and started making up beats in my room. Rapping is like a gate away from what I be going through. It's how I get everything out.

I started thinking about Destiny once I was wrapping up my beats. She seem different from all the hoes I was with. It don't seem like she would give it up that easy; and I actually respect that shit. Ion need no easy girl.

"Food ready." My mom yelled from downstairs. My house not all big or nothin. It's a town house, but still in the projects. I'm glad that we out of my old 2 bedroom house though.

Me and my boy Myles ran down the stairs and started fixing our plates. His people kicked him out a while back, so he started staying with me and my moms.

"Y'all better go wash them hands. I don't know where y'all fingers been." Moms said.

"Ms. Linda you know we don't be doing nothin." Myles said with a smirk while rubbing his hands together.

"Stop lyin and go on. Don't come to me if you end up getting some crabs or somethin." She replied.

"We don't be messing with no hoes maa , you ain't gotta worry." I said.

"Mhmm, come on before this food get cold boy."

-Destiny

I left the house after getting beat yet again. I always end up going back home, because I have no where else to go. It was real dark outside and I went on the swing.

"Honey, you need to go home. It's not safe to be out round here while it's dark." I heard a woman say. She looked about 40.

"I know, I just needed to get away from home." I respond.

"Come here baby." The woman said. I was a little skeptical at first, considering I don't know her, but I took a chance since she seemed nice and I've seen her around. I walked over and me and her sat on her porch.

"So why are you out here all alone?" She asked, taking a sip of her water.

"My mom and I had a disagreement." I said, not wanting to mention the real reason.

"Oh, do you always come out here at this time of night?"

"Yes mam, well most days." I respond. Then my stomach growled really loud, which took me and her by suprise.

"You hungry?"

"No mam" I said, even though I really was. I don't know when the last time I ate a full meal.

"Stop lying child, and come on. I just cooked a little something." She said getting up. "And call me Linda." She added, as I followed her into the house. As soon as we got inside the house she fixed my plate which consisted of salmon, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, green beans, with sweet tea. My mouth watered just looking at her fix it.

"Here you go sweetie. Go ahead and sit down." She said, setting my plate down on the kitchen table.

"Thank you." I said and immediately started digging in. The meal was so good that I rushed to finish.

"It's not going anywhere child, slow down some." She said, chuckling a little. "When was the last time you've had a full meal?" She asked.

"I-I don't know mam." I said, with my head low.

"Ok, go ahead and finish, I'll stop bothering you." She said, getting up from the table and walking to the bottom of the staircase. "Jalen and Myles, y'all come wash these dishes." She yelled.

They came walking down the staircase and were both surprised when they saw me. I got up and threw my plate away.

"Y'all stop staring and start cleaning this kitchen up." Ms.Linda said.

"I'll get going now. Thanks for the meal." I said.

"Your welcome. Jalen and Myles go walk her home and come right back home. Don't be out there playing." She said in a stern tone to them.

They walked outside and I followed behind them, then led them in the direction of my house.

"You stalking me now shawty?" Jalen said laughing.

"nope, your the one that walked me home yesterday to see where I lived." I responded, smiling.

"you got that one." He said.

"Baby no, you know I love it when you do that- wait I can come over? You'll really do that. Damn baby, you a nasty little thang" I heard Myles on the phone and I started laughing at how happy he looked.

"Nigga a fool." Jalen said, laughing too.

We stopped at the front of my house and was just standing in an awkward silence, well other than Myles's conversation that was going on.

"Thanks for walking me home." I said, to break the silence and started to walk away towards my door until he grabbed my hand. "Yess?" I question.

"Can I have a hug?" He asked, and I gave off an unsure look. "Come on Destiny, I walked you home and it's all dark. You got Mosquitos biting a nigga." I laughed and gave him a quick hug.

"bye Jalen." I said walking away.

"Bye Destiny"
