Madeleine (14 years old)

Jay and Will were both at work, but it was weekend so I had the day off. I was cleaning out in the attic, Jay said if I cleaned it, I could use it to study or have friends over or whatever I wanted to use it for.

I had put on some music and just spend all day cleaning out, until I felt upon a box with the label: Amelia Halstead. That is my mother's name, I thought to myself as I put the box down on the floor. I sat down next to it so I could open it.

It was filled with pictures of my mom, some all the way down to when she was in high school, and some where she was with Will and Jay. A couple of tears ran down my face as I look at the pictures of a woman who was my mom but that I didn't remember.

"Maddy, pizza." Jay yelled bringing me out of my thoughts. I put the pictures down and whipped away the tears before I went downstairs.
"There you are." Will said when he saw me. I sent him a fake smile, but both him and Jay noticed something wrong.

We sat down and I just started eating my pizza with out saying anything.
"What's wrong, Maddy?" Jay asked, as both him and Will stared me down. They hadn't touched their food yet. A tear fell down my cheek, but I just continued eating without answering.
"Maddy?" Jay asked his voice was soft probably since he could see me crying.

I put the pizza down and sighed before I started to speak.
"I don't remember mom." I said my voice breaking and I started crying. Jay and Will were confused for a moment but then they came over next to me and hugged me, as I just cried out.

Once I had gotten myself a bit together again, and my cries had turned into quite sobs, Jay spoke.
"Where is this coming from Maddy? Did anything happen today?" He asked confused, and I whipped the tears away preparing to speak.
"I found a box in the attic with mom's name on it, I opened it and it was filled with pictures of her." I said my voice cracking slightly.

Jay and Will looked at each other and had a silent conversation, but I couldn't quite figure about what it was about. Then Will turned to me.
"Show us the box then we can talk about the pictures." Will said with a smile as I nodded. I walked up to the attic Jay and Will trailing behind me.

I walked over and sat next to the box some pictures laying on the floor where I left them. Jay and Will sat down on each side of me and start looking at the pictures. Will started chuckling, and then he picked up a picture and showed it to Jay.
"Do you remember this?" Will asked and Jay started chuckling as well.
"Yeah, it was my first baseball game." Jay said.
"Tell me about it." I said eagerly. Will took a deep breath before he started to speak:

"It was both ours first baseball game. Jay was 7 I was 9. Mom decided to take us to a game, don't really know why one day we were just going. It was Cubs against White Sox. We were both really excited and the weather was amazing.

I don't really remember the outcome of the game; we were both just happy to be there. Mom bought us each a shirt, and we slept in that shirt for weeks after. I actually think we might still have the shirts here somewhere.

The day after mom and dad told us about you. That we were having a baby sister."

Will told and I almost started crying. They both had so many memories with her and I had none.
"Please tell me more." I pleaded wanting to know more. Jay looked through the pictures before he picked one up. It was a picture of our mom in a hospital bed holding a baby, Jay and Will standing beside her, that baby was me.
"This picture is taken on the happiest day of our lives..." Jay started as he started telling his story:

"Will and I walked home from school, to find an empty house. We waited for about an hour and then dad came. He told us that mom was in labour and we had to go to the hospital.

At the hospital was a lot of waiting. We played board games with the nurses, we didn't really understand what was going on, at least I didn't.

Finally, a nurse came out and told us we could come in. We walked in and there she was holding you in her arms."

Jay told with a huge smile.
"Please tell me what she was like." I pleaded, and Will picked up a picture of our mom where she was around my age. I looked a lot a like her.
"She was always smiling even when dad wasn't in the best mood." Will started out.
"She would always make us tea and soup when we were sick." Jay continued.
  "She would read for us."
"It is probably from her you have your love for books from."

Tears started to prick in my eyes as they continued to share stories about their childhood. They told me countless of stories about my mom, our mom and what she was like.
